Scoreline flatters Sutton as Carshalton bow out of Isthmian Cup
Despite what the scoreline suggests, The Robins put in a superb performance against Sutton United — a side two tiers higher — in the Isthmian Cup, showing quality, composure, and determination throughout. The 3–0 result didn’t reflect the balance of play, with Carshalton Athletic controlling possession, creating numerous chances, and largely dictating the tempo.
The hosts struck early, opening the scoring in the 4th minute — a harsh blow after a bright start from The Robins. Sutton doubled their lead in the 17th minute.
Far from being disheartened, Carshalton responded superbly. They moved the ball confidently, pressed with intensity, and created several opportunities to get back into the game. The Sutton goalkeeper was called into action multiple times, while The Robins defence stood firm against any counter-attacks.
The second half followed the same pattern — Carshalton on the front foot, pushing Sutton deep into their own half. However, the decisive third goal arrived in the 66th minute under controversial circumstances. As a high ball was delivered into the box, the Sutton forward appeared to clearly foul the goalkeeper, bundling her into the net as the ball crossed the line. Despite protests from players and staff, the referee allowed the goal to stand, claiming she hadn’t seen the incident. The decision understandably deflated the side and disrupted their rhythm for the remainder of the match.
While the result stings, there are plenty of positives to take. Against a strong Sutton side two divisions above, The Robins showed they can compete at that level — with their possession play, work rate, and intensity standing out throughout.
Attention now turns to Sunday’s league clash with Dorking Wanderers U23s, where we will aim to bounce back and continue their 100% winning record in league competition.
A frustrating result — but a performance full of promise and pride.
