CAFC vs Aveley – Preview

Following Tuesday’s win at Lewes, the Robins are back at Colston Avenue on Saturday to take on Aveley.

Carshalton Athletic

After a slow start to the season, the Robins are showing clear improvement, picking up two wins and three draws from their last five league games. Tuesday’s victory at Lewes lifted Carshalton up to ninth place as they look to continue climbing the table, although several teams around them still have games in hand.

Aveley

Aveley spent the last two seasons in the National League South following their promotion from the Isthmian Premier. After reaching the playoffs in 2023/24, they endured a tough 2024/25 campaign, finishing bottom and returning to the Isthmian Premier.

This season also began slowly, with just nine points from their first seven league games. However, their next seven have been far more successful, producing five wins and two draws to move the Essex-based side up to fourth. The Millers also enjoyed a strong FA Cup run, reaching the Fourth Qualifying Round before losing to National League side Gateshead, having beaten Hashtag United, AFC Sudbury, and Halesowen Town along the way.

Aveley will continue their promotion push with Saturday’s trip to Carshalton, but they face a tough test against a Robins side unbeaten in their last five league outings.

Head to Head

The sides last met during the 2022/23 season, when Aveley were last in the Isthmian Premier League. In the match at Colston Avenue in October 2022, Carshalton won 1–0 thanks to a first-half strike from Calvin Ekpiteta. Among the Aveley lineup that day was Bryan Ifeanyi, now a popular figure at Colston Avenue.

The return fixture at Parkside in March 2023 ended in a goalless draw. Despite taking just one point from the two meetings, Aveley went on to secure promotion to the National League South after beating Hornchurch in the playoff final.

Team News

Carshalton Athletic

Manager Peter Adeniyi made just one change to his lineup for the Lewes game and appears to be finding the right formula after a slow start. After two tough away fixtures, there may be some rotation, but settling on a consistent lineup can only help the Robins as they look to build momentum.

There was one notable departure last week, with full-back Aziz Sankoh leaving the club. Aziz made over 100 appearances for the Robins, including 54 last season when he featured in every competitive match. He has joined Isthmian South Central side Hayes & Yeading, already featuring twice against Hendon and Egham.

Thank you, Aziz – once a Robin, always a Robin!

Pre-Match Analysis

With Aveley unbeaten in their last seven league games and Carshalton unbeaten in their last five, Saturday’s clash at Colston Avenue promises to be a highly competitive encounter.

The Millers have been in prolific form, scoring 19 goals in their last six league games, and followed that up with a 9–0 win over Benfleet in the Essex Senior Cup on Monday. Carshalton, meanwhile, have kept just three clean sheets in 17 league games this season and will need to be at their best defensively to contain the free-scoring Essex side.

The Gaffer

Following Aveley’s relegation, Brett Munyard was appointed as manager. Brett began his managerial career with White Ensign, guiding them from Step 7 to Step 5. He then took charge of Brightlingsea Regent in November 2021, with the team sitting 19th after eight straight defeats, and successfully steered them to safety in the Isthmian Premier League.

Most recently, Brett moved to Maldon & Tiptree in November 2024, where he led them on a nine-game unbeaten run before joining Aveley.
