CAFC vs Cray Wanderers – Preview
After back-to-back 2–0 victories over AFC Whyteleafe and Wingate & Finchley, the Robins return to Colston Avenue on Saturday afternoon as they take on Cray Wanderers.
Carshalton Athletic
After an encouraging pre-season, Carshalton Athletic have carried that momentum into the start of the 2026/27 Isthmian League Premier Division campaign with back-to-back victories.
The Robins began pre-season in emphatic fashion with a 4–0 victory over a Bromley XI before facing tougher opposition from National League South sides. Hampton & Richmond Borough edged a 1–0 win at Colston Avenue, while Farnborough claimed a 3–1 victory despite Tope Fadahunsi getting on the scoresheet for Carshalton.
Steven Bates’ side then travelled to Hanworth Villa, where Fadahunsi gave the Robins an early lead before the hosts turned the game around with two second-half goals. Carshalton responded impressively, recording a 6–0 victory over Sutton Common Rovers before defeating Sheerwater 5–3 in an entertaining contest featuring several trialists and academy players.
Another eye-catching attacking display followed as the Robins defeated an AFC Wimbledon XI 9–4, with Nathan Young-Coombes scoring four goals.
Preparations concluded with a 1–1 draw against Dover Athletic before competitive action got underway. Carshalton opened the league season with a 2–0 victory away at AFC Whyteleafe thanks to goals from Prince Kandolo and Jack Jebb, before following that up with another impressive 2–0 win over Wingate & Finchley on Monday night. Ethan Kaiser opened the scoring with an early header before captain Fabio Saraiva sealed the victory with a stunning second-half free-kick.
With six points, two clean sheets and four different goalscorers from their opening two matches, confidence is understandably high heading into Saturday’s fixture against Cray Wanderers. Following this weekend’s game, the Robins travel to Essex to face Stanway Rovers on Saturday 22nd August.
Cray Wanderers
Founded in 1860, Cray Wanderers are widely recognised as one of the oldest football clubs in the world and the oldest senior football club in London. Originally formed in St Mary’s Cray, the club has spent much of its modern history competing in the Isthmian League and has built a reputation as one of the division’s most established and respected sides.
The Wands enjoyed one of the most successful periods in their recent history under Tony Russell, winning the Isthmian League South East Division title during the 2018/19 season to secure promotion to the Premier Division. Since then, they have established themselves as consistent competitors at Step 3, regularly challenging towards the top half of the table while developing an attractive, attacking style of football.
One of the biggest milestones in the club’s recent history came in 2024 with the opening of Flamingo Park, giving Cray Wanderers a permanent home for the first time in many years after spending long periods groundsharing. The move marked a significant step forward both on and off the pitch and has helped provide a platform for continued development.
Following the departure of Neil Smith towards the end of the 2024/25 season, former Lewes manager Tim O’Shea was appointed to lead the club into a new era. Expectations remain high, with Cray looking to challenge towards the upper reaches of the Isthmian Premier Division once again.
The Wands have also made a positive start to the new campaign. They earned a hard-fought 1–1 draw away at Wingate & Finchley on the opening day before hosting Cheshunt on Tuesday evening, giving them another opportunity to build momentum ahead of Saturday’s trip to Colston Avenue.
Head To Head
The sides met twice in the league last season, with both matches ending level. At Colston Avenue in September, Carshalton made a slow start, with Cray taking a 2–0 lead into the break thanks to goals from Alex Hernandez and Josh Williams. In rainy conditions, the Robins mounted a strong second-half response, with Luke Read reducing the deficit on 51 minutes. Tolu Ladapo was introduced for his debut and made an immediate impact, with the winger equalising on 78 minutes. Both sides ultimately had to settle for a 2–2 draw.
The teams met again at Flamingo Park in January. The Robins made a strong start, opening the scoring through Ben Mundele. However, Harry Bridle equalised seven minutes later, and both sides were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw.

With the season now underway, Steven Bates’ focus has shifted from preparing his squad to maintaining the strong start his side have made.
One of the biggest positives from the opening two fixtures has been the spread of goals throughout the team. Prince Kandolo, Jack Jebb, Ethan Kaiser and Fabio Saraiva have all opened their accounts for the season, underlining the Robins’ ability to score from a variety of positions.
While forwards Nathan Young-Coombes and Tope Fadahunsi will undoubtedly be expected to provide plenty of goals over the course of the campaign, Bates will be equally pleased to see defenders and midfielders contributing. Having goals shared across the squad makes Carshalton a far more difficult side to defend against and reduces the pressure on the club’s recognised strikers.
The Robins strengthened well during the summer, bringing in the likes of Charles Hagan, Tope Fadahunsi, Ethan Kaiser, Ben Dudzinski and John Ross, while Leo Young returned to the club permanently after an impressive loan spell from AFC Wimbledon last season.
Alongside the new arrivals, Bates has retained a strong core of players including Fabio Saraiva, Fikayo Atewologun, Denzel Akyeampong, Kavalli Heywood and Charlie George, giving Carshalton a blend of continuity and fresh quality.
Nathan Young-Coombes will also be hoping to open his league account after enjoying an excellent goalscoring return last season, when he scored five goals in nine appearances, before continuing that form throughout pre-season.
Having played twice in the opening week of the season, Bates is expected to assess his squad carefully ahead of Saturday’s fixture, with freshness and recovery likely to play an important role in his team selection.
Pre-Match Analysis
Saturday’s fixture brings together two sides who have both made encouraging starts to the new Isthmian League Premier Division campaign.
Carshalton Athletic currently boast a 100% record after consecutive 2–0 victories over AFC Whyteleafe and Wingate & Finchley. Just as impressive as the six points is the manner of those performances. Steven Bates’ side have looked organised defensively, keeping clean sheets in both matches, while creating plenty of chances at the other end. Four different players have already found the net, highlighting the attacking threat throughout the team.
Cray Wanderers have also started positively. A 1–1 draw away at Wingate & Finchley represented a solid opening result, and they will arrive at Colston Avenue having also faced Cheshunt earlier in the week. Tim O’Shea’s side possess plenty of experience at this level and will provide another stern examination for the Robins.
Carshalton will undoubtedly be looking to make home advantage count once again after an impressive performance against Wingate & Finchley on Monday evening, where a crowd of 550 supporters created an excellent atmosphere. Another positive result would maintain the Robins’ perfect start and further strengthen the confidence within the squad.
Both sides have shown defensive resilience early in the season, so Saturday’s contest could prove to be a closely fought affair. However, with Carshalton playing with confidence and momentum, the Robins will believe they have every chance of making it three wins from three.
Key Player
Soul Kader joined Cray Wanderers on loan from Bromley ahead of the new season and arrives with valuable experience at clubs in the National League South and Isthmian League despite still being only in his early twenties.
A product of Bromley’s academy, Kader made his senior breakthrough after progressing through the club’s youth system. Renowned for his pace, direct running and ability to play across the forward line, he has gained experience through a number of loan spells to aid his development.
Carshalton Athletic supporters will already be familiar with Kader following short but successful loan spell at Colston Avenue during the 2024/25 season. Kader netted in a 3 – 0 win at Hendon, as well as in a Surrey Senior Cup victory at Abbey Rangers.
Since then, Kader has continued to gain valuable first-team experience with further loan spells, including periods at clubs such as Hampton & Richmond and Horsham. Those moves have helped him develop physically and tactically while continuing his progression at Bromley.
Now back in the Isthmian Premier Division with Cray Wanderers, Kader will be looking to make an immediate impact. His familiarity with his previous experience at Colston Avenue add an interesting subplot to Saturday’s fixture.
With his pace on the counter-attack and ability to create chances in one-on-one situations, the Robins will know they must keep a close eye on the Bromley loanee throughout the afternoon.
The Gaffer
Tim O’Shea was appointed permanent manager of Cray Wanderers ahead of the 2025/26 season. A former professional defender, O’Shea began his playing career in the youth systems at Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur before signing professional terms with Spurs in the mid-1980s. He made a handful of first-team appearances for Tottenham and also enjoyed a brief loan spell at Newport County, before moving on to Leyton Orient and then Gillingham, where he made over 100 Football League appearances. He also represented the Republic of Ireland at youth level during his playing career.
Following spells playing abroad in Hong Kong and later in English non-league football with Farnborough Town and Welling United, O’Shea moved into coaching and management. His managerial experience includes spells at Grays Athletic, Croydon Athletic, and Lewes, with his time at Croydon Athletic highlighted by leading the club to promotion.
O’Shea first joined Cray Wanderers in March 2022 as assistant manager to Neil Smith and played an important role in the club’s on-field progress, including helping guide the team to one of its strongest league finishes and an FA Cup run. When Smith departed in March 2025 to take up a role in the Football League, O’Shea stepped up as caretaker manager and impressed with a strong run of results. As a result, he was appointed permanent first-team manager ahead of the 2025/26 season.
At Cray, O’Shea is known for his steady leadership and deep understanding of the club, as he looks to build on recent successes and push the Wands toward further competitive achievements in non-league football.
