Carshalton vs Hampton & Richmond – Report

Carshalton Athletic prepared for Saturday’s clash with league leaders Folkestone Invicta with a narrow 3–2 friendly defeat to Step 2 side Hampton & Richmond.

Following Saturday’s 4–1 victory over Wingate & Finchley, manager Steven Bates arranged a friendly against National League South opposition to allow players to gain match fitness ahead of the final six league fixtures. Tommy Bradford, Lawrence Ernest and Charlie George all started, having recently been limited to appearances from the bench.

Hampton got the game underway at Bedfont Sports Ground, and it was the Beavers who took the lead after nine minutes. The ball fell kindly to Haydon Vaughan just outside the penalty area, and the 19-year-old struck a sweet volley into the back of the net to give his side a 1–0 advantage.

Nathan Young-Coombes has made a great start to life at Carshalton and thought he had equalised on 20 minutes. Charlie George played an inch-perfect through ball to the Robins’ number nine, and Young-Coombes made no mistake, slotting home. However, the linesman had his flag up, and the goal was disallowed.

It was a tight call, but Young-Coombes was not to be denied a second time. The former Brentford striker levelled the scores on 32 minutes, meeting a low ball from the right-hand side and finishing first time past goalkeeper Luka Ziger to make it 1–1.

With half-time approaching, Carshalton nearly took the lead. The ball fell to Tolu Ladapo, whose low effort was pushed away by Ziger. The rebound dropped to Fareed Salifu, but the forward could only fire into the side netting.

Hampton & Richmond made the faster start to the second half and retook the lead on 51 minutes. A slick passing move ended with Jordan Greenidge applying a composed finish into the bottom corner to make it 2–1. Hubert Graczyk was then called into action, reacting well to push away a powerful effort from Craig Fasnmade.

Ryan Huke was introduced in the second half, and the Farnborough loanee nearly made an instant impact. The 21-year-old struck a low effort at goal, but Ziger was equal to it, pushing the ball away to preserve his side’s lead.

While the first half had been played in windy conditions, the weather worsened after the break, with stronger gusts and rain making things difficult for both sides.

Hampton & Richmond extended their lead on 77 minutes. Substitute Devan Ghedia fired home a powerful effort to make it 3–1. However, Carshalton responded quickly, reducing the deficit just two minutes later. Ladapo made a strong run down the right-hand side and delivered a low cross into the box, where Salifu was on hand to poke home and make it 3–2.

Carshalton pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages. Defender Leo Young ventured forward and received the ball in a promising position, but Ziger reacted well to hold his effort.

Vaughan, who had opened the scoring for the Beavers, nearly sealed the contest on 90 minutes, lashing an effort at goal, but Graczyk produced a brilliant save to tip it away.

Carshalton had one final chance to level in stoppage time. Eddie Allsopp tried his luck from just outside the box, curling an effort towards goal, but the former Wingate & Finchley man saw his strike clip the top of the crossbar.

Referee Martin Coughlan brought the game to a close, and despite the 3–2 defeat, there were plenty of positives for Steven Bates as his side gained valuable minutes ahead of the final six league games.

Attention now turns to Saturday, when the Robins travel to face runaway league leaders Folkestone Invicta.
