CAFC vs Stanway Rovers – Preview
Following Saturday’s 2–1 home win against Cray Wanderers, the Robins are back on the road this Saturday, making the trip to Essex to take on newly promoted Stanway Rovers.
Carshalton Athletic
After three matches of the 2026/27 Isthmian League Premier Division campaign, Carshalton Athletic have made an excellent start, winning all three of their opening fixtures and moving to the top of the table on goal difference.
The Robins began their league campaign with a 2–0 victory away at AFC Whyteleafe, with goals from Prince Kandolo and Jack Jebb securing all three points. They followed that up with another impressive 2–0 victory over Wingate & Finchley on Monday night. Ethan Kaiser opened the scoring with an early header before captain Fabio Saraiva sealed the victory with a stunning second-half free-kick.
Carshalton then returned to Colston Avenue on Saturday to face Cray Wanderers, and once again came away with maximum points. Nathan Young-Coombes opened the scoring in the first half, but the visitors fought back after the break, with Alex Hernandez equalising to make it 1–1. The Robins responded well, however, as Matt Yates restored Carshalton’s lead, with Steven Bates’ side holding on to secure a 2–1 victory.
The result leaves Carshalton with a perfect nine points from their opening three games, with six goals scored and only two conceded. Dartford are the only other side in the division to have maintained a 100% record after three matches.
The early-season success follows an encouraging pre-season for Bates’ side, who recorded four wins, one draw and three defeats. The Robins beat a Bromley XI 4–0, Sutton Common Rovers 6–0, Sheerwater 5–3 and an AFC Wimbledon XI 9–4, while drawing 1–1 with Dover Athletic. Defeats came against Hampton & Richmond Borough (1–0), Farnborough (3–1) and Hanworth Villa (2–1).
With nine points from nine, three victories and six different goalscorers already on the scoresheet, confidence is understandably high heading into Saturday’s trip to Stanway Rovers.
Stanway Rovers
Stanway Rovers’ rise through the non-league pyramid has been one of the most impressive recent stories in Essex football. The club, based in Colchester, was established in 1956 and has spent much of its history competing in the regional leagues before gradually working its way towards the national non-league system.
One of the club’s earlier milestones came in 2005/06, when Stanway won the Eastern Counties League Division One title to earn promotion to the Premier Division. They subsequently enjoyed success in the Eastern Counties League Cup, lifting the trophy in both 2008/09 and 2011/12.
More recently, Stanway have enjoyed a remarkable period of progress. After being transferred into the Essex Senior League in 2021, the club won the Errington Challenge Cup and Peter Butcher Memorial Trophy during the 2023/24 season, completing an impressive cup double.
The following campaign proved even more significant. Stanway were crowned Essex Senior League champions in 2024/25, earning promotion to the Isthmian League North Division for the first time. Rather than simply consolidating at the new level, Rovers immediately challenged near the top of the division.
They finished fourth in the 2025/26 Isthmian North, securing a place in the promotion play-offs. Stanway then defeated Waltham Abbey 2–1 in the semi-final before overcoming Redbridge on penalties in the final, securing a second successive promotion.
That victory completed a remarkable back-to-back promotion run, taking Stanway from the Essex Senior League to the Isthmian Premier Division in just two seasons.
Saturday therefore represents another landmark occasion for the club, as they prepare to compete at Step 3 of the non-league pyramid for the first time in their history.

Carshalton Athletic
With the campaign now in full swing, Steven Bates can turn his attention towards building on Carshalton’s encouraging opening to the season.
A particularly pleasing aspect of the Robins’ first three matches has been the number of different players finding the net. The side have scored six goals so far, with each one coming from a different goalscorer. Prince Kandolo, Jack Jebb, Ethan Kaiser, Fabio Saraiva, Nathan Young-Coombes and Matt Yates have all got themselves on the scoresheet, highlighting the attacking threat Carshalton possess throughout the team.
Naturally, forwards Nathan Young-Coombes and Tope Fadahunsi will be looked upon to contribute consistently as the season progresses. However, Bates will also welcome the attacking input from his midfielders and defenders. With goals coming from all areas of the pitch, opponents have more players to worry about, while the burden on Carshalton’s main strikers is eased.
Manager Steven Bates has also named the same starting XI in each of the three games so far and appears to have settled on his strongest side.
However, there was also a debut from the bench on Saturday for new signing Nico Jones, who joins following two years at Banbury United. The 24-year-old has played for a number of non-league clubs and also has EFL experience with Oxford United earlier in his career. He will be hoping to get more minutes as the season progresses.
Pre-Match Analysis
Carshalton Athletic head into Saturday’s fixture as the league leaders after making a perfect start to the 2026/27 campaign. The Robins have taken maximum points from their opening three games, recording 2–0 victories over AFC Whyteleafe and Wingate & Finchley before edging past Cray Wanderers 2–1 at Colston Avenue last weekend.
Stanway Rovers, meanwhile, have found life in the Isthmian Premier Division considerably tougher. Their opening fixture did provide plenty of encouragement, as they held Cheshunt to a goalless draw away from home. However, they were beaten 3–1 at home by Ramsgate before suffering a 4–0 defeat away at Welling United.
The contrasting starts mean Carshalton will arrive in Essex with considerable confidence, while Stanway will be determined to produce a response and secure their first victory at Step 3.
Experience is another factor in the Robins’ favour. Carshalton are now embarking on their ninth consecutive season in the Isthmian Premier Division, meaning Bates’ squad are accustomed to the demands and standard of football at this level. Stanway, by contrast, are competing in the division for the first time following their remarkable back-to-back promotions.
However, the Robins cannot afford to underestimate their hosts. Stanway have home advantage, and the trip to Essex represents one of Carshalton’s longer journeys of the season. The home side will also be motivated by the opportunity to claim their first Premier Division victory in front of their supporters.
On paper, Carshalton will understandably be favourites given their perfect start and greater experience at this level. However, Stanway will be fighting hard to put their first three results behind them and get their first win under their belts, making this a fixture the Robins will need to approach with the same focus and intensity that has served them so well during the opening weeks of the season.
Key Player
Stanway Rovers goalkeeper Dion Henry is a familiar face to Robins supporters, having previously spent part of the 2024/25 season at Carshalton Athletic.
Henry joined the Robins during the 2024/25 campaign and went on to make 10 appearances for the club. During that spell, he demonstrated his ability at Isthmian Premier Division level, including keeping three clean sheets against Bowers & Pitsea, Chatham Town and Cheshunt. Carshalton supporters will therefore know exactly what Henry can bring to a side at this level.
The goalkeeper has enjoyed a varied non-league career, with his early development coming through the academy at Peterborough United before progressing into senior football. He also spent time with Crystal Palace before gaining experience with clubs including Maidstone United, Hampton & Richmond Borough and Billericay Town.
After leaving Carshalton, Henry continued to build up his experience around the non-league circuit. He had spells with Brantham Athletic and Welling United before joining Tilbury during the 2025/26 season. He also made three appearances for Hythe Town before moving to Whitehawk in March 2026.
His time at Whitehawk gave him another opportunity to play regularly at Step 3 level, and his previous experience in the Isthmian Premier Division means he already knows what Saturday’s opposition are likely to bring.
For Stanway, having an experienced goalkeeper who has already played at this level could prove particularly valuable during their first season in the Premier Division. For Carshalton fans, meanwhile, Henry’s presence adds a familiar face to a historic first meeting between the two clubs.
The Gaffer
Stanway Rovers’ appointment of Brad Wellmen represents another significant addition to the club’s first season in the Isthmian Premier Division.
Wellmen arrives in Essex with an impressive record of success at Canvey Island, where he spent four years as first-team manager after initially stepping into the role in 2021. He had previously been part of the coaching setup at the club before taking over from Mark Bentley.
His first major achievement came during the 2021/22 season. Wellmen guided Canvey Island to second place in the Isthmian North before leading them through the play-offs. After a 3–1 semi-final victory over Felixstowe & Walton United, Canvey faced Brentwood Town in the final. The match finished 1–1 after extra time before Canvey won the penalty shootout to secure promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division.
Wellmen then helped Canvey consolidate at the higher level, with the club reaching the Premier Division play-offs during their first season back in the division. They ultimately lost to Aveley in the semi-final, but the achievement underlined Wellmen’s ability to build competitive sides capable of challenging for promotion.
His time at Canvey also ended with another major piece of silverware. In 2024/25, Wellmen guided the club to victory in the Essex Senior Cup, with Canvey defeating Hornchurch on penalties in the final.
Now appointed by Stanway at the beginning of the 2026/27 season, Wellmen brings valuable experience of both promotion campaigns and Isthmian Premier Division football. His task will be to use that experience to help another Essex club establish itself at Step 3.
