CAFC Women vs Farnborough FC – Report
In a thrilling contest between two well-matched sides, Carshalton Athletic Women edged Farnborough FC 3–2 at Colston Avenue on Sunday. The Robins held on for victory by the narrowest of margins, with the visitors coming close to completing a dramatic second-half comeback.
The Reds dominated possession in the early stages, moving the ball confidently and probing Boro’s defensive line with intent. Despite their lively presence around the penalty area, Aaron Lamont’s side couldn’t carve out a clear-cut chance, with the final killer pass just out of reach.
Ten minutes in, the visitors issued their first warning. A defensive lapse from Ward gifted Boro an opportunity, and after a smart cutback from the byline, their attacker fired just inches wide of McNulty’s post — a huge let-off for Carshalton.
Having come perilously close to falling behind against the run of play, the Robins quickly regained control and looked the more threatening side once again. Their persistence paid off in the 12th minute when defender Evie Nebbitt broke the deadlock. A well-worked short corner saw Scarlett take a moment to compose herself before whipping in a superb delivery. Nebbitt rose highest to glance a header past the motionless keeper from close range, an emphatic finish and a deserved lead.
By the 20-minute mark, Carshalton were piling on the pressure, particularly from set pieces. Scarlett’s outswinging corner found a trialist darting to the near post, only for the header to flash narrowly wide of the far corner. Moments later, Honey Dulley unleashed an audacious strike from distance on the right channel. The shot was spilt, and though Eade reacted quickly to the rebound, Boro managed to scramble it clear under pressure.
Just minutes later, Georgie Edwards delivered a true captain’s contribution to double the advantage. After Scarlett’s first-time effort was blocked inside the box, the loose ball fell kindly to Edwards. Showing great composure, she took a touch and unleashed a powerful 25-yard strike that burst through the goalkeeper’s gloves and into the back of the net.
Play was briefly halted following a brave save from the Boro goalkeeper, who took a one-on-one effort straight to the face and required treatment. Once the game resumed, trialist played a clever ball in behind for Scarlett, who did well to reach it and float a teasing delivery across the face of goal. Unfortunately for the Robins, there was no one in red on hand to turn it into the empty net and extend the lead.
With five minutes remaining in the half, Heather Eade drifted into space on the right side of the penalty area and fired an effort straight at the goalkeeper. The shot was split, and Sarah Chapman was inches away from pouncing on the rebound. The final action of the half saw Dulley drive into the penalty area and unleash a rising effort towards the roof of the net, but the goalkeeper was equal to it, holding on well under pressure.
In the absence of Kanita Throp, corner-taking duties fell to Eade. Early in the second half, the forward ramped up the pressure with a series of dangerous deliveries. One corner was returned to her on the edge of the box, and she nearly made it count—only a sharp diving save denied her finessed effort from curling into the far corner.
At the other end, Boro began to apply serious pressure on the Carshalton defence. The Robins narrowly escaped danger following a threatening cutback and a misjudged pass from Patton, who had stepped in for McNulty in goal. Moments later, Taylor struck low and hard from close range, but the visitors shot-stopper reacted superbly, keeping the ball out with a strong outstretched leg.
On the hour mark, the Reds extended their lead to three. In what had been a much more competitive second half, Taylor was played through and broke clear on goal. One-on-one with the keeper, she struck high—though the shot was initially parried, it had enough momentum to trickle over the line and into the net.
Boro immediately pushed for a response and nearly found one, but Patton came to the rescue with two outstanding diving saves to preserve the lead.
In the 68th minute, the match suddenly burst into life after a relatively subdued spell. The Yellows were awarded a penalty and converted it confidently—Patton guessed correctly, diving to her right, but couldn’t quite reach the well-placed strike.
Moments later, chaos followed. Both Edwards and Patton were sin-binned, reducing Carshalton to nine players against Boro’s full eleven. Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Reds launched a frantic attack, with a scramble in the box nearly resulting in another goal. However, the chance slipped away, and Boro broke with pace on the counter, sliding the ball under stand-in keeper McNulty to make it 3–2.
The match continued at a lively tempo, more intense than typically expected in a friendly. Slater latched onto a lofted pass in behind the defence and squared it to Eade, whose powerful strike left a defender requiring treatment. Moments after play resumed, Chapman was quickest to react, driving into the box and firing a fierce effort towards the near post, only for the goalkeeper to respond with a sharp save.
The match concluded early at the 80-minute mark (40 minutes each way), with the Robins edging out Boro by a narrow margin. It was another valuable run-out, adding important minutes to the legs and sealing back-to-back pre-season victories. Attention now turns to Tuesday evening, when Carshalton face Step 5 side Sutton United Firsts.
