CAFC Women vs Tooting Bec – Preview

Carshalton get their Capital Intermediate Cup campaign underway on Sunday, making the short trip to face Tooting Bec in the last 32.

Tooting Bec

Tooting Bec play in the seventh tier of women’s football, competing in the Greater London Women’s League. They’ve made a strong start to their season and currently sit second in their division with five wins and two defeats – trailing only Leyton Orient, which is no disgrace given that Orient are the only tier 7 side remaining in the FA Cup.

Carshalton Athletic

Following their thrilling 4–3 win over Sutton Reserves in the Surrey Divisional Cup last weekend, the Robins have now won four games in a row. There’s little time to rest on their laurels, though, with another tough test ahead against Tooting Bec in the Capital Intermediate Cup – a competition that will serve as a good measure of the team’s progress, featuring sides from tiers 6 and 7 of the women’s football pyramid.

Capital Intermediate Cup

The Capital Intermediate Cup is open to women’s teams from tiers 6 and 7 across the London area. Carshalton entered the competition for the first time last season. In the last 32, they defeated Croydon FC 3–1 at Colston Avenue, with Georgie Edwards scoring twice and Abbie Measures also on target. Their run ended in the last 16 with a 5–2 defeat away to South London FC, despite goals from Heather Eade and Sarah Chapman.

Tooting Bec enjoyed a strong campaign themselves last season, reaching the quarter-finals, while Brentford went on to lift the trophy after a penalty shootout win over Farnham Town at Meadowbank.

Head to Head

This will be the first competitive meeting between the two sides, though they have faced each other twice in recent friendlies. In November 2024, Carshalton travelled to Tooting Bec and played well but eventually fell to a 4–1 defeat. However, the Robins got their revenge in August with a 6–0 win at Colston Avenue, thanks to goals from Badley, Hudson-Odoi, Underhill, Sargent, and a brace from a trialist.

Pre-Match Analysis

Carshalton progressed to the quarter-finals of the Surrey Divisional Cup on Sunday with their 4–3 victory over Sutton United Reserves. While that competition is limited to tier 7 and 8 sides, the Capital Intermediate Cup presents a fresh challenge – and an opportunity for manager Aaron Lamont to test his team against higher-level opposition as the tournament progresses.

Despite their 6–0 pre-season win over Tooting Bec, the Robins are well aware of the threat their opponents pose, particularly given their earlier friendly defeat and strong league form since. If the tie is level after 90 minutes, the match will go straight to penalties – something both managers will be factoring into their preparations.
