Carshalton Beat Canvey Island
Carshalton Athletic picked up their first win since November with a 3–1 victory over bottom side Canvey Island at Colston Avenue.
Manager Steven Bates made five changes to the side that lost 2–1 at Potters Bar Town last weekend. All three of the new signings announced on Friday went straight into the starting line-up – Eddie Allsopp, Ryan Huke and Nathan Young-Coombes. Ben Mundele returned to the starting XI following injury, while Noah Nzuzi started the game after coming off the bench at Potters Bar.
The Robins got the game underway on a mild afternoon at Colston Avenue. It was a big match for both sides and arguably one that neither could afford to lose – or even draw – given the state of the league table. Carshalton started the brighter of the two sides and went close on 11 minutes. A good move ended with the ball falling to Fabio Saraiva outside the box, and the midfielder struck an effort at goal, but his shot sailed wide of the post.
The Robins had another chance to open the scoring a few minutes later. Saraiva was involved again, dinking a ball through to Ryan Huke. The Farnborough loanee slipped but was able to recover and beat his man before firing a low shot at goal, which was held by Jacob Marsden.
Canvey Island began to grow into the game and nearly went ahead from a corner kick as the ball bounced around in the penalty area, but the Robins were eventually able to clear. The visitors did take the lead on 19 minutes. The Gulls won a free kick on the right-hand side which was taken by Conor Hubble. His delivery went to the far post, where Mike Finneran was able to head the ball home – despite a slight touch from goalkeeper Hubert Graczyk to give the visitors a 1–0 lead.
It was a frustrating way for the Robins to concede, but Carshalton fought back quickly. Debutant Eddie Allsopp got himself on the ball and fired an effort towards goal from outside the box. His strike hit the arm of a Canvey Island defender and referee Nicholas Dunn showed no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot.
There was then a brief stoppage for an injury to a Canvey player, but it did not affect Bryan Ifeanyi, who stepped up and comfortably slotted the penalty home, sending Marsden the wrong way to make it 1–1.
Carshalton looked to take the lead when Eddie Allsopp’s corner found Young-Coombes at the back post, but the former Brentford striker was unable to finish.
The half-time whistle soon followed, and both sides knew they would need to find a winner in the second half to keep pace with their respective survival bids. Steven Bates made a half-time change, bringing on Fikayo Atewologun in place of Noah Nzuzi, with Luke Read moving into midfield to accommodate Atewologun slotting into centre-back.
Disaster struck for Canvey Island on 51 minutes when Luke O’Neill was shown a straight red card. Nathan Young-Coombes was played through and got ahead of O’Neill before being brought down by the Canvey defender outside the box. Referee Nicholas Dunn quickly awarded the free kick to Carshalton and judged O’Neill to be the last defender. Dunn went straight to his pocket and produced the red card, reducing the visitors to ten men. From the resulting free kick, Allsopp stepped up but curled his effort over the crossbar.
The Robins began to control the game more with their man advantage and took the lead on 63 minutes. The ball found Young-Coombes in a central position around 18 yards out. Instead of going for goal himself, he played the ball across to substitute Tolu Ladapo, who had the simple task of slotting the ball into an empty net to give the Robins a 2–1 lead.
Carshalton were on top but did have a slight scare on 68 minutes when Conor Hubble’s free kick was turned home for the visitors, only for the linesman’s flag to go up for offside.
The Robins then doubled their advantage on 78 minutes. Charlie George picked up the ball just outside the box and fired a low shot at goal which evaded Jacob Marsden and nestled into the bottom corner to give Carshalton a 3–1 lead.
Nathan Young-Coombes looked lively on his debut for the Robins and nearly scored on 87 minutes when he worked his way into the box and struck an effort from a tight angle, but Marsden did well to save with his legs. The ball fell back to Young-Coombes again and he attempted to bury the rebound, but it was blocked away for a corner.
From the resulting set piece, Saraiva whipped the ball in towards Luke Read, but the delivery took a slight touch off the head of a Canvey defender and Read was only able to get the slightest touch himself, sending the ball out for a goal kick.
The game moved into six minutes of stoppage time, with the Robins pushing for more. Carshalton delivered a corner into the box which was headed towards goal by Atewologun, but his effort drifted just wide of the target. The Robins’ final chance of the game fell to Fabio Saraiva, who struck a powerful effort that beat Marsden but rattled against the post.
Referee Nicholas Dunn then blew for full time as the Robins secured their first victory after a 16-game winless run. The result moves Carshalton up two places to 17th, though they remain just one point ahead of Cray Valley PM in 19th – the final relegation spot.
Attention now turns to Saturday, when the Robins travel to Hertfordshire to face Cheshunt in another crucial league fixture.
