Carshalton Athletic suffered a disappointing defeat on Saturday, losing 4–0 to high-flying Chatham Town at Colston Avenue.

Following Monday’s entertaining 3–3 draw with Cheshunt, manager Peter Adeniyi made three changes to his starting XI. Fikayo Atewologun returned at centre-back, with Ben Mundele moving to right-back as Josh Shonibare missed out. Kola Salami came back into the side with Stanislaw Rzeznik dropping to the bench, while Fabio Saraiva made his first start since November, replacing Noah Nzuzi in midfield.

The game got underway on a mild afternoon at Colston Avenue, with plenty at stake for both sides. Chatham began the day in third place, while the Robins sat 15th. The opening stages were relatively even as both teams settled into the contest. However, it was the visitors who carved out the first real opportunity on nine minutes – and they took it. A ball from the left-hand side found Adam Leathers in the centre, and he smashed an effort past Matt Kerbey, with the shot going in off the underside of the crossbar.

It was a strong start for Chatham, who continued to push forward. On 16 minutes, Matt Macarthur made a good run down the left, cut inside, and took aim from outside the box. He struck a low right-footed effort, but it lacked the power to trouble Kerbey, who saved comfortably.

Tope Fadahunsi was looking dangerous for the visitors and nearly made it 2–0 on 23 minutes when he dragged his shot wide of the far post after a strong run. However, the Chatham striker would not be denied six minutes later, as he doubled his side’s advantage. Chatham won the ball back on the right-hand side, and Ollie Evans delivered a low cross into the box. Fadahunsi was first to react, turning the ball home with a first-time finish to make it 2–0.

Carshalton struggled to create clear chances as Chatham made themselves difficult to break down. The Robins were limited to a few half-chances: Oppong, who looked lively, saw his effort blocked by a defender,

while Fabio Saraiva shot from a tight angle on the right-hand side, only for his effort to be saved comfortably by Nathan Harvey. Frustration began to show, epitomised when Luke Read was shown a yellow card for a late challenge on Ollie Evans.

On 40 minutes, Chatham went close again as the two goalscorers combined, with Fadahunsi laying the ball off to Adam Leathers, whose powerful strike was blocked before reaching Kerbey. The visitors then earned a golden opportunity on 43 minutes when they were awarded a penalty. Sam Sene-Richardson reached the ball ahead of Sanchez Ming, who brought down the young midfielder, leaving the referee with no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Macarthur stepped up and sent Kerbey the wrong way, striking the ball to the keeper’s left to give Chatham a 3–0 lead.

There was nearly a fourth before the break. Kerbey, in possession outside his box, played a loose pass that was intercepted by Kian Moynes. From distance, Moynes attempted to lift the ball into the empty net, but Kerbey reacted quickly, recovering to get back and catch the effort.

The referee blew for half-time, leaving the Robins with a mountain to climb. Chatham were clearly the happier side at the interval. With a commanding lead, they were able to rest key players in the second half, with goalscorer Leathers replaced at the break and Sene-Richardson withdrawn soon after. The visitors were content to control possession, passing the ball well without creating many further chances.

Despite the scoreline, Carshalton continued to attack. Rzeznik, introduced in the second half, had the Robins’ best chance on 72 minutes.

His effort tested Harvey – who had endured a quiet afternoon – but the Chatham goalkeeper was equal to the strike.

As time ran out, Ben Allen thought he had made it 4–0 when he fired past Kerbey, but the assistant referee’s flag was already raised for offside. Carshalton then had one final chance in stoppage time. Ladapo, on as a substitute, delivered a cross from the right, which Rzeznik met on the volley.

However, the strike was hit straight at Harvey, who made another solid save to secure his eighth clean sheet of the season.

Chatham were not finished, and in the fourth minute of stoppage time they added a fourth goal. The ball fell to substitute Anokye-Boadi, who curled a strike from just outside the box into the bottom corner to cap off an impressive performance. The referee blew for full time shortly afterwards.

It was a tough afternoon for the Robins, who suffered their heaviest defeat of the season.

Chatham were impressive throughout, showing their quality at both ends of the pitch – clinical in front of goal and well organised defensively, making themselves extremely tough to break down. The result drops Carshalton two places to 17th, just one point above the relegation zone. For Chatham, they took advantage of Brentwood’s defeat to move up to second place as their promotion push continues.

The Robins will now need to dust themselves down and go again, with a trip to high-flying Cray Wanderers up next on Saturday.
