Carshalton Edge Into Surrey Cup Final
Carshalton Athletic edged into the final of the Surrey Divisional Cup for the second successive season after an entertaining 4–3 win over Dorking Wanderers U23s at Colston Avenue.
Manager Aaron Lamont made three changes to the side that beat Walton & Hersham last weekend. Beth Yarrow returned between the sticks in place of Lauren Allen, while Demi Allen and Taylor McCrea dropped to the bench. Leanne Bell came back into the starting line-up, and Lamont also handed a debut to striker Abigail Claringbold.
The game got underway on a mild afternoon at Colston Avenue, and the Robins made a fast start, opening the scoring after just three minutes. Leanne Bell played a through ball to pick out the marauding Bianca Underhill on the left-hand side, and the wing-back curled her effort into the far corner to make it 1–0. There was some initial confusion after the linesman raised his flag on the far side, but referee Neil Rolland eventually signalled for the goal.
Dorking began to gain a foothold following Carshalton’s opener and went close on eight minutes. Jasmine Smith was played through on goal and hit a low effort, but Beth Yarrow did well to tip it away for a corner.
The visitors threatened again on 21 minutes when a mis-hit clearance from the Robins fell to Holly Crane in a promising area, but the Dorking forward fired wide.
Carshalton thought they had doubled their lead on 26 minutes when Dee Badley finished off a well-worked move. However, the referee ruled the effort out for handball in the build-up.
Underhill then had a chance to add to her early opener when she picked up a loose ball and struck a first-time effort at goal, but it was comfortably held by Dorking goalkeeper Tia Botting.
The game was end-to-end, with both sides pushing forward. Dorking went close on 32 minutes after Isabelle Beaumont squared the ball to Jasmine Smith, but the Wanderers forward fired over the crossbar. Smith was then forced off injured following a collision with Yarrow and was replaced by Maisie Dale, who made an immediate impact. Slipped through on goal, Dale made no mistake, slotting the ball under the onrushing Yarrow to level the scores at 1–1.
The equaliser was a blow for the Robins, but they responded quickly. On 41 minutes, after a scramble in the Dorking penalty area, Honey Dulley laid the ball off to Dee Badley, who curled a superb low effort into the bottom corner to restore Carshalton’s lead at 2–1.
The Robins went into the break a goal ahead, but Lamont knew there was still work to do in the second half to secure a place in the final. Carshalton created the first chance after the restart on 51 minutes, when debutant Claringbold found Badley with a neat pass, but her shot was held by Botting.
Dorking levelled again on 57 minutes. The ball fell to Holly Crane, who struck a powerful effort from outside the box. The shot flew over Yarrow and into the net to make it 2–2.
Once again, Carshalton responded swiftly. Three minutes later, they won a free kick around 35 yards from goal in Dorking’s half. Captain Georgie Edwards stepped up and curled a powerful effort into the top corner, giving Botting no chance and putting the Robins back in front at 3–2 with half an hour to play.
Yarrow was soon called into action, getting down well to save a low effort from a Dorking forward.
She produced a similar save moments later, but this time the rebound fell kindly to a Wanderers attacker who, with the goal gaping, fired over the crossbar.
Lamont turned to his bench, introducing Demi-Lee Allen, Aisha Douglin, Taylor McCrea and debutant Remmi Gardner. Gardner, using her fresh legs, drove into the Dorking penalty area before firing into the side netting.
Carshalton extended their lead on 74 minutes. Substitute McCrea did well to win the ball back on the right-hand side of the penalty area and cut it back to Badley, who turned home her second goal of the game to make it 4–2.
It would have been easy for Dorking to throw in the towel, but the visitors continued to press and were rewarded on 82 minutes. Holly Crane was played through on goal and calmly slotted home her second of the game to reduce the deficit to 4–3.
That goal set up a nervy finish, with Carshalton clinging to a slender advantage. Dorking went close to an equaliser when the ball was cut back to Cerys Spilsbury, but her effort was straight at Yarrow. The visitors dominated the closing stages and won a late free kick after Douglin committed a foul in her own half. Crane stepped up and curled an inswinging effort at goal, but Yarrow gathered confidently.
As the game moved into stoppage time, Dorking knew an equaliser would send the tie to penalties and threw everything forward, even sending goalkeeper Tia Botting up for a corner. However, their efforts proved in vain, as the referee eventually blew the full-time whistle after a tense finale witnessed by 172 supporters in attendance.
The result means Carshalton will face Milford & Witley in the final (date TBC), after they secured a 4–3 semi-final victory over Hartland on Sunday. The Robins will be aiming to retain the Surrey Divisional Cup, having lifted the trophy last season.
Carshalton’s next scheduled fixture is away to Sutton United Reserves in the league on Sunday 29th March. Additional competitive fixtures may yet be added, as the club awaits a new date for the postponed trip to Chessington & Hook, as well as an outcome regarding the abandoned league match against Croydon FC.
Lamont will be keen to keep his side sharp in the meantime and may arrange friendly fixtures – supporters are advised to keep an eye on the club website and social media channels for updates.
