Carshalton Lose 9 Goal Thriller

Carshalton Athletic fell to a 5–4 defeat at Colston Avenue on Sunday against Sutton United Reserves.

The Robins came out of the blocks firing and nearly took the lead after just seven minutes. Amelia Kimble spotted Langan off her line and struck a powerful effort from distance.

It looked destined for the net, but Langan managed to get a slight touch to tip it around the post.

From the resulting corner – which went out for another – the Robins did take the lead on eight minutes. Heather Eade’s inswinging corner from the left-hand side glanced off a Sutton defender’s head – although the ball may already have crossed the line – and flew into the back of the net. Carshalton didn’t care, as the Robins stormed into an early 1–0 lead.

Carshalton continued to push forward. On 14 minutes, Bianca Underhill advanced down the right and whipped in a cross which found Kenza Gueriani, whose header drifted just wide of the far post. Soon after, Leanne Bell tried her luck from a free kick outside the box; her effort was on target but comfortably held by Langan. The Robins had yet another chance to double their lead on 22 minutes when Kimble delivered into the box, but Badley couldn’t apply the finishing touch.

Despite Carshalton looking the better side, it was Sutton who struck next on 26 minutes. A defensive mix-up allowed Tess Ciccardini through on goal, and she made no mistake, slotting past Beth Yarrow.

The goal halted Carshalton’s momentum and the game evened out, but the Robins retook the lead on 43 minutes. An Eade corner caused chaos in the Sutton box and the ball fell kindly to Demi Allen, who calmly finished to make it 2–1.

However, Sutton equalised right before the half-time whistle, with Ines James firing into the bottom corner to send the teams in level at 2–2. It was a frustrating end to the half for Carshalton, who had created the majority of the chances.

Carshalton would have hoped for a quick response after the restart, but within the first minute of the second half Sutton went ahead, Brianna Gilbert-Lawal finding the net. Just a minute later it got worse for the Robins, as Ciccardini netted her second to make it 4–2.

Now facing a mountain to climb, Carshalton pushed forward. Substitute Honey Dulley found a good position but fired into the side netting.

It didn’t take long for the Robins to pull one back. Another excellent corner from Eade was met by Sargent,

who headed home and immediately grabbed the ball for a quick restart.

Carshalton continued to look dangerous from set pieces and nearly equalised on 71 minutes. Eade again found Allen from a corner, but she couldn’t convert this time.

Sutton pressed to try and kill the game off and almost had a fifth on 76 minutes, but Morgan Parnell produced a brilliant block. However, on 83 minutes the visitors did get their fifth. Gilbert-Lawal delivered a low ball across the box from the right, finding Ella Khaldoun unmarked at the back post for a simple tap-in.

The Robins pulled one back in stoppage time when Leanne Bell was brought down in the box. The referee pointed to the spot,

and Eade confidently fired into the bottom corner to set up a frantic finish.

Despite their efforts, Carshalton couldn’t find an equaliser before the referee blew for full-time.

Next up, the Robins make the short trip to Croydon Arena to face Croydon FC, where they will be aiming to return to winning ways as the title race intensifies.
