Croydon Clash Abandoned Due To Injury
Carshalton’s Surrey Premier Division fixture was abandoned on Sunday, with the Robins leading 6–0 early in the second half.
Manager Aaron Lamont made four changes to the side that beat Chessington & Hook United. Beth Yarrow, Demi Allen, Taylor McCrea and Suzanne Davies all came into the starting XI, while Lauren Allen, Xaiden Gooding and Nadia Sabania missed out, and Lara Rodriguez dropped to the bench.
After a tricky game at Croydon Arena earlier in the season, Carshalton knew they needed to make a fast start – and they did just that by opening the scoring after four minutes. The Robins won a corner on the right-hand side, taken by Bianca Underhill. She delivered a low ball to the edge of the box, where Leanne Bell struck first time.
Her curling effort evaded Danielle De Souza and flew into the back of the net to give Carshalton a 1–0 lead.
On eight minutes, the Robins nearly doubled their advantage. Suzanne Davies slipped a ball through to Honey Dulley, who was through on goal, but De Souza narrowed the angle well and made a strong save. However, three minutes later Dulley was not to be denied. Played through once again, she calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner
to make it 2–0.
Carshalton added a third on 17 minutes. A ball in from the right-hand side was met by Dee Badley, whose effort was saved, but the rebound struck McCrea and nestled into the back of the net to extend the lead to 3–0.
The Robins continued to push forward and nearly made it four on 20 minutes. Looking to recreate Bell’s opener, Underhill again delivered a low corner to the edge of the box. Bell struck a powerful effort from distance, but this time it crashed against the crossbar before being cleared.
Carshalton remained firmly in control and did make it 4–0 on 31 minutes. Bell picked up the ball some 35 yards out and spotted De Souza off her line. She took full advantage, unleashing a powerful strike that looped over the Croydon keeper and into the back of the net.
The Robins went in search of more and went close when Gueriani’s delivery from the right found Badley in the middle, but the former Croydon forward fired over.
The Robins soon added a fifth. Underhill’s corner from the right was met by the head of Georgie Edwards, and Gueriani applied the final touch to turn the ball home and make it 5–0.
Croydon found chances hard to come by but did create an opportunity on 38 minutes. The visitors regained possession high up the pitch and worked the ball into the box, where a Croydon forward struck for goal. The effort took a deflection off Demi Allen, allowing Beth Yarrow to make a comfortable save.
Carshalton then made it 6–0 on 40 minutes. Davies picked up the ball in midfield and threaded a clever pass through to Dulley. The young winger took a touch before slotting the ball into the bottom corner for her second goal of the game.
The referee blew for half-time with the Robins firmly in control. Carshalton began the second half as they had ended the first. On 50 minutes, Underhill looked to curl an effort into the far corner, but her shot was tipped away into the path of Dee Badley, who fired the rebound over the crossbar.
Following that chance, Croydon goalkeeper Danielle De Souza went down injured. She received lengthy treatment on the pitch, and ultimately the referee made the decision to abandon the match.
