From Forward Lines to Defensive Fortitude: Josh Shonibare Retained

Carshalton Athletic are beyond delighted to announce the retention of Josh Shonibare for the 2025-26 season.

“Josh is simply a winner,” said Manager Peter Adeniyi. “Holding himself to exceptionally high standards, he has consistently exceeded my expectations both on and off the field. Arguably one of the quickest players at the club, his pace and relentless energy make him a joy to watch. His ability to shut down opposition counterattacks is invaluable to our team. Coupled with his impressive technical skill and composure under pressure, Josh is firmly in the conversation as one of the league’s best right-backs — now it’s up to him to prove that.”

Adeniyi added: “Though a quiet leader, Josh has quickly earned the respect and admiration of his teammates. What excites me most is the belief that his best is still ahead. I fully expect Josh to deliver an outstanding 2025/26 season.”

Shonibare joined the Robins in early January 2025 and made his debut in a 2-2 draw against Whitehawk. Initially deployed in a front three alongside David Smith and Nabeel Ghannam, reflecting his background as a wide attacker/forward, Shonibare soon demonstrated his versatility. With strong competition in the attacking positions, he adapted seamlessly to right-back, often coming on as a substitute for the hugely talented Nathan Paul-Lavaly.

In this new role, Shonibare’s exceptional speed and unwavering stamina along the flank have been instrumental in disrupting opposition counterattacks while also generating several key attacking chances. His ability to deliver dangerous crosses into the penalty area has been a major asset to the team.

Prior to joining the Reds, Shonibare developed through the Derby County academy before spells at Cheshunt and Maidstone United. At the Stones, he was a crucial figure during the latter part of the 2022-23 season, scoring four goals in 12 National League appearances after joining in February. Despite Maidstone’s relegation and an offer to extend his stay, Shonibare chose to pursue his career elsewhere.

At 27-years-old, Shonibare has transitioned from a forward role to a dependable full-back under Adeniyi’s stewardship, displaying maturity and adaptability. Since stepping into the right-back position following Paul-Lavaly’s recall by Bromley, Shonibare has been a standout performer, making 16 appearances during the 2024-25 season and establishing himself as a vital part of the squad.

Shonibare scored the third goal in the 3-1 victory over Dover Athletic, brilliantly drifting inside and skilfully squeezing the ball into the keeper’s bottom left-hand corner, leaving a stunned Gillmore unable to make the save. The finish was particularly impressive given the tightness of the angle.

We look forward to seeing Shonibare continue to develop and make significant contributions to Carshalton in the coming season.
