Luke Read departs Colston Avenue
Luke Read has agreed terms with Brentwood Town FC and so after many years at Colston Avenue, Luke’s football career will now be at a club more local to his hometown in Essex
Luke Read has become one of the most dependable and respected players at Carshalton Athletic, establishing himself as a key figure in the Robins’ defence across several seasons at Colston Avenue.
A defender by trade, Read has been valued not only for his reliability and consistency, but also for his versatility. During his Carshalton career he has operated as a centre-back, developed into an attacking full-back, and then moved back into central defence when the team needed leadership and composure at the heart of the back line. The club has described him as a “cornerstone” of the defence and a fan favourite.
Read’s importance to the side was underlined in the 2023/24 season, when he was named Player of the Season. Despite interest from other clubs, he committed himself to Carshalton for the following campaign, a clear sign of both his loyalty to the club and the regard in which he was held by supporters and staff.
The following year, 2024/25, was another excellent campaign. Read made 47 appearances and scored 4 goals in all competitions. Those goals included memorable moments such as his brace in the 4–3 thriller against Billericay Town, a late winner against Potters Bar Town, and an important goal against Cheshunt. By the end of that season, he had reached 199 appearances since joining the Robins, making him a true modern mainstay of the side.
His consistency was again recognised when he was named Manager’s Player of the Season for 2024/25. Read was praised as “the very definition of consistency” and very rarely he had produced a below-par performance over several seasons.
In 2025/26, Read continued to show his value at both ends of the pitch – 6 goals, 5 assists and even 1 game in goal.
