A point, but frustration persists against Haringey Borough

Updated: Oct 31, 2021

Carshalton Athletic came away with a 1-1 draw from Haringey Borough on Saturday despite a sub-par performance.

Speaking after the game, a clearly frustrated first team coach, Keith Boanas, commented: “We’re making the same mistakes too often. The players really need to reflect on what they can do personally to achieve the performance levels we expect. As a management team, we certainly are, in terms of the decisions we’re taking and team selection.”

Carshalton’s afternoon got off to the worst possible start. After a recent run of scoring early goals themselves, the Robins found themselves on the receiving end when Haringey scored in the very first minute. An inswinging corner from Michael O’Donoghue was only half cleared and centre back Scott Mitchell’s hooked shot dribbled in to the bottom corner.

Having battled through the early onslaught, Carshalton gradually recovered their composure as the half went on and were rewarded with an equalizer after 19 minutes. Harry Ottaway cleverly made some space in a crowded penalty area and fired home a shot with the help of a small deflection for his fourth goal of the season.

After the break though, the Robins struggled to find their rhythm and the best chances fell to Haringey Borough. Half time substitute Anthony McDonald looked like he had to score when he rounded Lloyd Thomas, but a heavy touch took the ball out of play. Carshalton’s best effort came from a corner, Haringey keeper Tiernan Parker making a good save low down from a Jalen Jones header.

The game ended, as it had started, with disappointment for the Robins, Eze Ebuzoene receiving a red card for a second bookable offence seconds before the final whistle. Boanas however was fulsome in his praise of Ebuzoene’s performance. “We needed 10 other Eze’s out there today. The red card was as much a result of his effort and endeavour as anything else.”

The draw meant that Carshalton dropped to 13th in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
