A touch of Klass lifts Rooks past Carshalton

Carshalton Athletic fell to a 1-0 defeat at Lewes on Tuesday night, courtesy of a 25 yard second half strike from Michael Klass.

A cagey first half saw relatively few chances for either side in stark contrast to a number of recent goalfests in which Lewes have been involved and that have made them the league’s highest scorers. Carshalton’s best effort came when Tommy Bradford whistled a shot across the face of the goal. At the other end, Taylor Maloney’s free kick had Lloyd Thomas scrambling across his goal but went just wide.

A Carshalton side showing five changes to the starting line up from the weekend cup tie against Horsham, including a return for Bradley Williams after an absence of several games, came out for the second half with more attacking intent. But once again the finishing touch eluded them. Paris Hamilton-Downes, Dan Bassett and Dan Hector all had efforts blocked or saved, while Lewis White hit the outside of a post after making space for a shot on the edge of the penalty area.

However, having subdued Lewes’ previously potent attack for large parts of the half, the Robins could do little about what turned out to be the deciding goal. Carshalton appeared to have quelled the danger of an attack down their right side, but as the ball broke to Klass outside the penalty area he arrowed a sweetly struck drive into the corner of the net.

The defeat means that the Robins continue to tread water in mid-table in the Isthmian League Premier Division.
