Carshalton Athletic are on the road again in the cup as they face Welwyn Garden City in the first round of the FA Trophy on Saturday 13 November (3pm kick off) in what will be the first ever meeting between the two clubs.
Despite entering the game in scintillating form after scoring 11 goals in the last two league games, including a 5-0 midweek victory over previously unbeaten Folkestone Invicta, the Robins can’t afford to be complacent about facing their lower league opponents.
Last season, Welwyn Garden City enjoyed a run to the third round of the FA Trophy, which included a win over Carshalton’s previous opponents in this season’s competition, Horsham, before losing to National League Aldershot. And their route to this Saturday’s clash has included an impressive 3-1 away win in the last round at Carshalton’s Isthmian League Premier Division neighbours, Merstham, their goals coming from Jay Rolfe, Lee Close and George Ironton.
Consistency in the league has been rather harder to come by for the Citizens. However, they come into Saturday’s game on the back of a 2-1 home victory in midweek over Southern League Division One Central basement dwellers, Colney Heath, with Ironton, son of manager Nick Ironton, again on the scoresheet.
