Injury hit Carshalton Athletic fell to a second consecutive home defeat as Bognor Regis Town broke a five game winless streak to take all three points with a 1-0 win at Colston Avenue on Monday night.
With Brad Williams the latest senior player added to the list of injured after Saturday’s loss to Potters Bar Town, Carshalton once again got off to a slow start. Lloyd Thomas had to make a good reaction save to prevent a Paris Hamilton-Downes own goal from a Bognor free kick. Shortly after, Thomas was a spectator as a deflected Jake Flannigan shot bounced off the inside of the post to safety.
On 28 minutes Bognor got the goal they had been threatening, albeit with some good fortune. Thomas managed to parry Harvey Hughes’ shot after good work by Rocks’ top scorer Nathan Odokonyero near the corner flag, but the ball rebounded off Hamilton-Downes and into the net.
An improved Carshalton looked more threatening after the break. Danny Bassett was just over with a dipping shot from outside the penalty area while at the other end Dan Gifford pulled wide the Rocks’ best chance of a clinching goal.
On loan from Dorking Wanderers goalkeeper, Slavomir Huk, made the save of the match from a Dan Pappoe header as the Robins made a final push for an equalizer. And in injury time he was equal to a shot from young Robins’ substitute Anton Vorukov to preserve all three points for the visitors and complete a double for Bognor over Carshalton this season.
Speaking after the game, Robins’ coach Alberto Kurti said: “It’s another disappointing result, but we’re missing seven senior players and there was no faulting the work rate of the players on the pitch tonight. Spirit within the team is still strong and we’ll be ready to fight for the points at Brightlingsea Regent on Saturday.”
