Carshalton come through tense finale at Horsham

Carshalton Athletic battled through a nerve jangling final few minutes to down this season’s cup specialists Horsham 3-2 in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

The way the game started, it looked like it would be a routine win for Carshalton. With just two minutes on the clock, Harry Ottaway squared for Dan Bassett to finish emphatically and open the scoring. Five minutes later it was 2-0 when Lewis White got in behind the Horsham defence and fired into the roof of the net from 10 yards for his fifth goal of the season.

The Horsham team appeared to have next week’s trip to League Two Carlisle United in the FA Cup first round on their minds as the Robins threatened to run away with the game in the first 20 minutes. Dan Bennett and Abdul Sankoh, making his first start of the season, both brought out good saves from home keeper, Sam Howes.

Horsham, whose cup form this season has belied their current lowly Isthmian League Premier Division position, weren’t lying down though and reduced the deficit when Rob O’Toole headed in Tom Richards’ cross.

Just as it looked that Horsham might be grasping some momentum, the Robins restored their two goal lead on the stroke of half time. A Bassett corner reached an unmarked Paris Hamilton-Downes eight yards out from goal and his sweetly struck volley nestled in the bottom corner.

After half time, the game looked to be petering out to a comfortable Carshalton win until some Horsham substitutions brought a renewed energy to their play. One of the substitutes, Eddie Dsane, signalled an exciting finish to the game when he diverted home fellow substitute Shamir Fenelon’s shot-come-cross with eight minutes of normal time to play.

Minutes later it seemed odds on that another substitute, Adam Adam would bring the Hornets level, but Luke Read appeared out of nowhere to make an important block. From the clearance, Carshalton almost got a clincher to calm the nerves of the visiting supporters. Ottaway’s lob over the advancing Howes was heading in when Richards scrambled back to clear off the line.
