A scrappy second half goal from Enfield Town’s goalscoring talisman, Mo Faal, condemned Carshalton Athletic to a 2-1 defeat at the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium on Tuesday night.
Showing every sign of having put the disappointment of Saturday’s result against Cray behind them, the Robins started strongly, seizing control of the game from the kick-off. Shortly after Brad House had made a good save from Jake Cass in an islolated Enfield attack in the early going, Lewis White put Carshalton in front after 22 minutes.
Tommy Bradford drove towards the penalty area after intercepting a poor Enfield clearance and when his shot was blocked, it fell to White who found the far corner.
As the half progressed, Enfield began to threaten more, particularly from set pieces. It was from one of these that they claimed the equalizer just before half time. Cass kept the ball alive after it looked like Carshalton had averted the danger and when his cross was only partially cleared, centre back Nathan Smith drove in a half volley off the base of the post.
The second half saw the home side play with more of the conviction and confidence that has taken them to second place in the Isthmian League Premier Division. They took the lead after 52 minutes when Faal’s toe poke after a goalmouth scramble wrong footed House for his 26th league goal of the season. Five minutes later he nearly added another but Brad Williams got back to clear his lob off the line.
With Dan Bassett struggling after taking a first half knock and White and Harry Ottaway being tightly shackled, Carshalton found chances hard to come by in the second half. Substitute Eze Ebuzoeme wasn’t far off earning the Robins a point when his late shot fizzed over the bar, but with Faal threatening to add to his account as the game opened up in the final stages, they fell to their second successive league defeat.
