County cup tie rounds off 2021

Updated: Dec 22, 2021

Carshalton Athletic play their last game of 2021 when they travel to The Spectrum in Guildford to meet Guildford City in a Surrey Senior Cup first round tie on Wednesday 22nd December (7.30 pm kick off).

A Robins’ side that mixed experience with youth progressed to this stage with what, in the end, was a comfortable 5-0 win against another Combined Counties League Premier Division South team in Raynes Park Vale - Dan Bassett scoring a hatrick that night. Guildford City benefitted from a bye in the preliminary round.

For Carshalton, fixture reshuffles mean it will be their first game since 11th December when they beat Merstham 3-1 at Colston Avenue, with goals from Lewis White, Dan Bennett and Bassett. It’s also their last before New Year’s Day, when they travel to Corinthian Casuals for an Isthmian League Premier Division fixture.

Guildford City, on the other hand, played at the weekend, coming away with a 3-1 win from Banstead Athletic. Recent signing, Harrison Livingstone took his tally to three goals in two games with a brace in that game. The Sweeney’s other main goal scoring threats are Jordan Adeyemi and Nathaniel Mensah with 15 and 13 goals respectively this season.

Currently sitting mid-table in the Combined Counties League, Guildford reached the third round of the FA Vase this season before losing recently on penalties to Southall. The club’s best performance in the Surrey Senior Cup was in the 2016/17 season when they lost to the eventual winners, Woking, in the semi-final.

For three years before World War II, Guildford City was actually a full-time professional club, playing at that time in the old Southern League. However, fortunes dipped after the war and the club eventually went under in 1974 before being reformed in 1996. A sign of future optimism and ambitions is that it has announced the opening of an academy from September 2022.
