Déjà vu as Klass lifts Rooks past Robins

Two goals in two first half minutes cancelled out another Dan Bassett goal for Carshalton Athletic as fourth placed Lewes took a 2-1 win away from Colston Avenue on Saturday.

After Taylor Maloney had hit a post early on for the visitors, Carshalton took the lead with their first real effort on goal. In-form striker Bassett collected the ball outside the area and powered a curling shot past Lewes goalkeeper Lewis Carey for his fourth goal in consecutive games and his 18th goal of the season.

The Robins included new signings Korrey Henry and Dan Roberts from Merstham and Dartford respectively in the starting line-up and Roberts nearly made it 2-0 a few minutes later, but Carey made an important save with his legs.

Lloyd Thomas was equal to a Maloney free kick halfway through the first half, but the game turned in the blink of an eye with a double Lewes counter-punch shortly before half time. After intricate play around the edge of the box, the excellent Michael Klass, who had scored the winner in the first game between the sides at Lewes in November, toe poked the ball past a helpless Thomas from 12 yards. Klass then turned provider shortly afterwards as he won the ball in midfield and fed winger Razz Coleman de Graft who advanced into the penalty area and lashed the ball into the roof of the net off of Thomas’ legs.

Lewes’ leading scorer Joe Taylor hit a post for the visitors early in the second half and later lifted another shot over the bar as they looked to extend their lead.

Despite a lot more possession after the break, Carshalton struggled to breach a resolute Lewes defence. Bassett was just off target with another shot but only in the last five minutes did the Robins pose a real threat, with both Omar Koroma and Dan Bennett going close as they pushed in vain for a late equalizer.

The game ended with the Robins down to 10 men after another debutant, Ergis Shala, signed last week on loan from Southend United, was sent off for a second yellow card offence in added time.
