Dans at the double lift Robins over Cheshunt

After successive defeats at Cray and Enfield, goals from Dan Bassett and Dan Bennett gave Carshalton Athletic their fourth win in six games and revived their playoff hopes with a 2-1 win over Cheshunt at Colston Avenue on Saturday.

Bassett netted his fifteenth goal of the season to set the Robins on their way after 14 minutes, hooking the ball over Cheshunt goalkeeper, Preston Edwards after Paris Hamilton-Downes had nodded down Luke Read’s cross.

Shortly after, an injury to Dan Pappoe, making his second debut for the club after signing from Wingate and Finchley, forced a defensive reorganisation. Cheshunt twice nearly took advantage as the Robins made the transition, but Carshalton keeper Lloyd Thomas, returning after a two week absence, denied Jamie Reynolds both times – first saving in a one-on-one situation and then somehow tipping a top corner bound shot onto the post in another candidate for save of the season.

Pappoe’s replacement, Bennett, who had already nearly doubled the advantage after a solo break early in the second half, made no mistake with a second chance after 65 minutes. Receiving the ball just inside the penalty area, he danced around a trio of Cheshunt defenders before lifting the ball past Edwards.

Three minutes later, Carshalton almost added a third when Bobby Price’s shot came back off a post. But rather than comfortably closing out the game, the home supporters were made to sweat out a final do-or-die burst of Cheshunt pressure ahead of the final whistle after Reynolds had curled in a shot over Thomas’ head with two minutes remaining.

Speaking after the game, coach Alberto Kurti commented: “With us and Cheshunt equal on points before the game, we saw today as effectively a must-win game for keeping our playoff hopes on track, so we’re delighted we were able to pull out the win.”
