Horsham turn the tables on Carshalton

Horsham beat Carshalton Athletic 1-0 at Colston Avenue on Monday night in a reversal of the result of the recent FA Trophy game between the two sides that Carshalton won 3-2.

Buoyed by two consecutive league victories prior to this game, Horsham started the game strongly with both leading scorer Shamir Fenelon and fellow forward, Eddie Dsane, prominent in the early stages. In the first 15 minutes, Dsane first rattled the post with a shot from a tight angle and then forced a good save from in-form Robins’ keeper, Lloyd Thomas, with an effort that was curling into the bottom corner.

Shortly afterwards, Carshalton had another close escape when their former skipper, Danny Dudley’s effort came down off the bar after a corner and Lee Harding’s follow up was diverted away for another corner by Harry Ottaway.

An injury to Fenelon however, which led to his replacement, blunted Horsham’s attacking edge and as Carshalton gradually worked their way into the game, Lewis White went close.

The Robins’ best spell came early in the second half when both Dan Bassett and Ottaway were inches away from converting dangerous crosses. Yet, even with the benefit of fresher legs after Saturday’s game against Hornchurch was abandoned in the first half, Carshalton coach, Alberto Kurti acknowledged “we were never really at the races tonight, and we need to do better”.

With 20 minutes to go, they were made to pay. A moment of indecision by Jordan Cheadle allowed substitute Lucas Rodrigues in behind him and his low cross was turned in by Harding with the benefit of a deflection. A few minutes later, Horsham nearly scored a bizarre second when Dudley’s free kick from inside his own half eluded everyone and rolled just wide.

A frustrating night for Carshalton was sealed when White was denied an equalizer in injury time by Horsham keeper, Sam Howes, who made a fine one-on-one save.
