Thumping away win at Harlow

Updated: Nov 2, 2018

We got back to winning ways as we halted a run of four defeats with a stylish 4-0 victory over Harlow Town, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news Daniel Pappoe and Jerson dos Santos came in for Kalvin Morath-Gibbs and Mike Dixon, while Ola Sogbanmu was back among the substitutes.

Kick-off Our hosts were one point behind us in the league, but four points from their last two games certainly made them the form team.

But we created the first real chance of the game on seven minutes - Tommy Bradford was played in and his left-footed drive was beaten away by keeper Josh Bexon.

That move led to a couple of quick corners that caused panic inside the Harlow six yard box but, although we didn't make them count, we continued to become the more dominate side and a slick move in the 21st minute led to the opening goal.

We got the ball out on the left and dos Santos played a neat one-two with Ricky Korboa before getting into the box. His low cross was met by the incoming Michael Onovwigun whom side-footed home for his first Robins goal.

Town responded with their best chance of the half just just two minutes later - Jules Haabo worked some space in our box and fired off an angled shot that flashed wide of the top far corner.

We perhaps should've extended our lead on 27 minutes as another corner led to panic in the home six yard box, Peter Adeniyi nodded the loose ball across the face of goal and dos Santos inexplicably headed over from three yards.

Then Bradford was foiled again as we broke from a Town free kick in our half. It was Korboa that played his teammate in but Bexon got down to smother the low shot.

But we eventually pulled further ahead on the stroke of half-time - Braford found an advanced Bobby Price whom had an initial shot blocked in the box, only to then dig out a left-footed second attempt that dipped inside the top far corner.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 2

Almost typically, having not been two goals to the good at half-time this season yet, a linesman was unable to come back out for the second-half. A call went out for a volunteer replacement and, thankfully, a qualified official offered their services.

Town made a couple of early substitutions but it was us still creating the best chances - dos Santos did really well to nod a Jordan Cheadle cross into the path of Korboa, who was then one-on-one with Bexon, but he hurried a shot straight at the keeper.

We also broke with purpose and had four-on-two as we bore down on the Town goal at one point, but a pass out to Price was hit first-time by our captain and the cross sailed over everyone inside the area.

The game then began to swing back-and-forth around the hour mark as Town began to exert a bit more pressure on our backline.

And they almost grabbed a goal on 67 minutes as a forward ball nicked off the head of Pappoe and it landed in front of Jason Raad, but Billy Bishop performed his only save of the game as he got low and parried the ball away.

But we continued to look dangerous on the break and dos Santos skipped away from his marker on 78 minutes before cutting along the byline. He had Adeniyi free for a pull-back, but our forward tried to beat Bexon whom saved with his feet. The ball bobbled agonisingly across the face of the goal and Bexon stretched out and just diverted the ball away from our incoming player/manager.

It was two substitutes of our own that really shone during the last 10 minutes however.

Mendy and Dixon came on in the 82nd minute and, just a minute later, the pair combined as the latter tucked in a low cross from close range for his third goal of the season.

And, on 86 minutes, Mendy himself  cut inside a couple of opponents from the right before taking aim from 25 yards and burying a rocket past a statuesque Bexon and into the top right-hand corner.
