Match report - victory away at Faversham Town

We got back to winning ways with a hard-fought three points against Faversham Town, writes James Barrett-Sterling.

Team news Mohammed Idris-Olishaja replaced the injured Bobby Price, while there were starts for Raheem Sterling-Parker and Ryan Healy. New signing Charlie Burns, a goalkeeper arriving from Grays Athletic, was named among the substitutes.

The game started brightly as both teams looked to get forward but, in a reversal of the fixture at ours back in September, it was Faversham who took an early lead.

Renford Teynue latched on to a ball over the top and he beat Billy Bishop as the home side looked to continue on from their 6-1 win over Shoreham in midweek.

But, exactly as before in that fixture back at Colston Avenue, Sterling-Parker scored on 19 minutes – only this time the goal drew us level rather than turn into the eventual winner.

Ola Sogbanmu did well to hold up the ball inside the Town area before laying it off to Christie Pattisson. His cross was only half-cleared and Sterling-Parker was clipped as he got onto the loose ball. He picked himself up to coolly slot the spot-kick away for his 15th of the season.

Both sides were playing some nice stuff on a slightly sticky pitch but, while Bishop was equal to a Ben Chapman effort, we took the advantage on 37 minutes.

Tommy Bradford deftly lobbed the ball over Simon Overland from 18 yards – the home keeper thought he’d done enough to keep the ball, by knocking it onto the crossbar, but the linesman flagged that it had already dropped over the line.

The second-half was closely fought as Faversham never gave up looking for an equaliser, although Christie Pattisson was twice denied by Overland early doors.

We picked up a few yellow cards as we fought to protect our lead but Bishop wasn’t called into any serious action, while Ola Sogbanmu saw a header in added time deftly palmed away by the home keeper.

This victory was our seventh in eight games and also means we’ve only lost one game since the start of November – a run that was seen us climb to second in the table, sitting five points behind Lewes but with two games in hand,
