A 96th minute penalty kept Carshalton in the FA Trophy as they battled back from three-down to force a replay against Aveley, writes James Barrett-Sterling.
Carshalton Athletic 3 – 3 Aveley FA Trophy first round proper Saturday 14th December 2019 Attendance: 349 Last five results: LWWWD Our ‘Man of the Match’: Kleton Perntreou
Team news There were three changes from the side that beat Bognor Regis Town – Luke Read was injured, plus Bobby Price and Lenny Hein were ill so Danny Dudley, Michael Kamara and Ricky Korboa all came back in.
Kick-off The visitors had a clear-cut chance to go in front early doors as Alex Akrofi got on a loose ball in midfield before sending George Sykes in behind the Carshalton backline. The striker had plenty of time and space as he bore down on Kleton Perntreou, but he eventually put a shot wide of the target.
It seemed the game was destined to begin and end with spot-kicks as Aveley took the lead on 15 minutes – Akrofi tangled with Daniel Pappoe in the box, the referee pointed to the spot and Firmin Ngandu sent Kleton Perntreou the wrong way.
And things got worse for the Robins just three minutes later as centre back Harry Gibbs ghosted onto a corner kick and turned it home first-time from six yards.
The Robins were struggling to get a foothold in the game as their visitors’ energetic pressing style stifled their attacks regularly – Ricky Korboa’s 25-yard pot shot on 37 minutes, which flew way over the bar, their only shot of note before the break.
Almost an exact copy of Aveley’s first chance occurred again on 44 minutes – Akrofi played in Sykes again, but this time Perntreou was called into action as he blocked away a low effort from close range.
HALF-TIME: 0 -2
Harry Ottaway was introduced for Jerry Amoo at the start of the second-half, but Akrofi was looking to the heavens on 48 minutes as he burst between two defenders only to drag a shot wide from just inside the area.
But Carshalton did fall further behind six minutes later, although Aveley’s third had a stroke of luck to it - Jason Raad’s placed effort cannoned off Danny Dudley to wrong foot Perntreou and creep inside the opposite post.
It was looking bleak for the home fans but thankfully their side gave them something to cheer about on 57 minutes – Ottaway got Korboa away and he attacked the Aveley defence before slipping a pass back into the path of his teammate and the returning striker buried an angled shot low past David Hughes.
The Millers responded as Dudley gave away a free kick 20 yards from his own goal, but thankfully Raad’s strike smashed off the crossbar before being cleared.
The home side were starting to put more pressure on the Aveley defence now, but the visitors’ pace almost paid off again on 73 minutes after they cleared a Carshalton corner. They had three-on-two and ball was finally played to Akrofi but he was denied by Perntreou’s fine save.
Sinatra Antwi, one of Carshalton’s under 23 players, was introduced for the last quarter of an hour and it was his cross on 81 minutes that found Korboa inside the Aveley box. He was forced to turn away from goal so he played the ball back to Christie Pattisson whom, from 25 yards, placed a stunning effort over Hughes and inside the top far corner.
It was game on and the Colston Avenue faithful erupted but time ticked down – Paris Hamilton-Downes put a free header on a corner off target and Korboa’s mazy run on 89 minutes ended with a weak effort at Hughes.
But there was one final twist in this amazing cup tie and it came six minutes into added time – Korboa was tripped by a defender as he held up the ball inside the visitors’ box and Hamilton-Downes kept his nerve to put the penalty away for his fourth goal of the season.
