Team news

One change from the side that beat Bognor Regis Town last week as Bobby Price replaced Kershaney Samuels who was carrying a slight knock.

Kick-off

It was a cagey start by both teams in this one, misplaced passes and goalkeepers not called into any serious action, although Omar Koroma was seemingly caught inside the Town area on four minutes but the referee blew up and booked the striker for simulation.

The same man almost opened the scoring on 12 minutes as his header on a corner was cleared off the line. A second corner was met by Paris Hamilton-Downes at the back post but he could only divert the ball into the side-netting.

The home side utilised the long throw of Max Herbert throughout and, on 23 minutes, one of these was only half-cleared by the Carshalton defence. The ball was switched out to Charlie Losasso whom teed up Dan Bayliss, but the defender's shot was always rising over the bar.

But the first goal arrived four minutes later - Koroma flicked on a long ball and Jerry Amoo had some space inside Town's area. The midfielder didn't truly catch his left-footed shot but it ended up a perfect pass as Christie Pattisson came onto the ball at the back post before tucking it away.

The game ebbed back and forth as the home side were content to stifle Carshalton's forward play, but their striker Nathan Minhas cut a lone furrow as Danny Dudley, Daniel Pappoe and Luke Read dominated high balls.

Town were indebted to keeper Mark Scott in added time as Amoo acrobatically volleyed a half-cleared corner goalwards. The ball hit a combination of Dudley and Joe Gater but, as it headed towards the bottom near corner, but the shot stopper saved the ball at full stretch.

Scott was then at fault for a second corner delivery as he dropped the ball at his near post. Price came onto it and fizzed a low shot on target, but the keeper redeemed himself by blocking it away.

HALF-TIME: 0 - 1

Town came out for the second-half a changed side as they pressed forward with more purpose - Losasso hitting an early free kick just wide of Kleton Perntreou's right-hand post.

The same player had another sight of goal on 54 minutes as he cut inside from the right and unleashed a left-footed effort that whistled just wide.

Carshalton changed things up by introducing Tommy Bradford just before the hour, but the Robins had to work hard to stem the red tide that threatened to break through to Perntreou.

Ernald Haxhiu went on a rare sortie forward on 64 minutes as he slalomed past three opponents and into the home box, but Scott bravely rushed out to block the ball away at the midfielder's feet.

Amoo made way for Levi Phillips on 71 minutes and, not long after that, Carshalton delivered a knockout blow to effectively settle the tie - Bradford took aim from 20 yards, Scott got down to parry the shot and Koroma seized the rebound before slamming in from a very tight angle.

The hosts' heads didn't fully drop however and, just two minutes later, Perntreou was forced into a low save as Nick Bignall took aim from 20 yards.

The game swung back and forth - Read headed a goalbound header on a corner effectively off his own line, while Ricky Korboa sent a shot straight at Scott on 83 minutes.

But the home side's misery was compounded a minute later as Phillips read a loose pass and burst between two defenders. He would've been clean through on goal but Bayliss grabbed the winger's shirt to halt his progress. The referee had no hesitation in pulling out a straight red card.

Scott was called into action again before the end - saving shots from both Korboa and Bradford respectively - but Carshalton kept a third clean sheet in a row and will be in Monday's draw for the next round of the competition.
