A second-half fightback wasn't enough to yield anything from a Tuesday night trip to Enfield, writes James Barrett-Sterling.
Enfield Town 2 - 1 Carshalton Athletic Isthmian Premier League Tuesday 26th November 2019 Attendance: 261
Last five results: WWWWL Our 'Man of the Match': Paris Hamilton-Downes
Team news There was one change from the side that beat Tooting and Mitcham United last Saturday as Kershaney Samuels came in for Lenny Hein.
Carshalton got off the worst possible start in this one – less than one minute on the clock when Jon Muleba got down the right and his low cross was swept in at the near post by Muhammadu Faal.
The home side now had a zip in their step, but the Robins were afforded a great chance to equalise with their first real threat on goal – Tommy Bradford got Jerry Amoo in but his dinked effort was gratefully grabbed by Nathan McDonald.
Enfield looked the more likely however as Ken Charles put a shot from a good position off target, while Billy Bricknell hit a 20 yard free kick into the arms of Kleton Perntreou.
But Town doubled their lead in fortuitous fashion on 29 minutes – a long Joe Payne clearance saw a mix up in communication between Danny Dudley and Perntreou on the edge of the area and Bricknell essentially tapped the ball into an empty net.
Dudley had to go off with suspected concussion following the collision but, thankfully, he was able to leave the stadium.
Omar Koroma was brought on as Carshalton reshuffled their personnel and he almost reduced the arrears on 44 minutes as he spun on a pass 20 yards from goal, but McDonald got down to palm the ball round the post.
HALF-TIME: 2 - 0
The second-half was a completely different affair as the Robins put the pedal to the metal from the off.
Korboa put a shot off target, following a great foray forward by Ernold Haxhiu, while Koroma was seemingly bundled over in the Town box but the referee waved away the penalty appeals.
But Carshalton got themselves back into it with a straight-forward goal on 53 minutes – Pattisson’s corner, Hamilton-Downes’ header, 2-1 and game on.
Enfield responded less than two minutes later as Scott Thomas looked up from 35 yards and his speculative effort had to be tipped over by Perntreou.
Carshalton kept knocking at the door however – Amoo had an effort on target headed away by Glenn Wilson, Korboa had another strong claim for a spot-kick dismissed and a low Pattisson cross on 67 minutes just needed a touch from anyone in the six yard box to fly into the net.
Bobby Price was next to line one up from distance on 71 minutes, but his shot lacked power as McDonald smothered it.
And the home keeper was at it again two minutes later as Korboa struck a firm angled drive from 18 yards on target, but McDonald sprang to his left and palmed it over the crossbar.
The Robins couldn’t find that elusive equaliser and Town could’ve rubbed further salt into the wounds in added time, but sub Junior Mubiayi was blocked away after bursting through with only Perntreou to beat.
