It was back to winning ways as Carshalton eventually beat 10-man Enfield Town, writes James Barrett-Sterling.
Carshalton Athletic 2 – 0 Enfield Town Isthmian Premier League Saturday 4th January 2020 Attendance: 494 Last five results: DLDLW Our ‘Man of the Match’: Ernold Haxhiu
Team news There was one change from Wednesday’s defeat at Leatherhead – Ernold Haxhiu came in for Christie Pattisson, while new loanee Lewis White was named among the substitutes.
Kick-off The Robins had the ball in the back of the visitors’ net as early as the sixth minute, but Peter Adeniyi was just offside as he ran onto a Kershaney Samuels through ball and watched his low cross bundled in by Ricky Korboa.
Enfield responded through Ryan Blackman whom took aim from 20 yards two minutes later, but Kleton Perntreou got down to parry the effort away.
Carshalton were neat and tidy in possession but their next serious chance came on 21 minutes – a neat flick-on by Harry Ottaway got Korboa away, but his eventual lofted shot flew wide of the far post.
The approach play by the home side was good at times, but the final pass or flick wasn’t quite on point. One time a Carshalton player did get in on goal was when Adeniyi chested down a Samuels pass but the angle was tight and he thrashed an effort into the side-netting.
And the visitors tested Perntreou again just before the break as a snap-shot by Lyle Della-Verde was pushed away by the goalkeeper at full length.
HALF-TIME: 0 - 0
Town captain Mark Weatherstone had his head in his hands just after the restart – a corner kick came in and he met it with a free header, but the ball flew way off target.
Carshalton responded and a neat moving involving Tommy Bradford, Korboa and Ottaway got Adeniyi in on goal, but McDonald blocked his eventual shot.
White was introduced for the player/manager just after the hour but the visitors thought they’d scored on 65 minutes – Perntreou saved an effort by Della-Verde and Junior Mubaiyi finished on the follow up, but the linesman’s flag curtailed the celebrations.
Town Striker Billy Bricknell was then shown a yellow card for a lunging challenge on White and that proved costly as, on 70 minutes, the forward went down under the attentions of Daniel Pappoe. Both players had been cautioned and it was unclear whom was being dismissed, until Bricknell left the pitch shell-shocked at being booked for simulation.
And Carshalton rubbed salt in the wound as Koroba found Jordan Cheadle down the left. His cross found Ottaway whom skilfully guided the ball over McDonald’s head first-time before watching it nestle inside the far post.
The visitors made a double substitution but the Robins made it a double of their own – Samuels played a perfectly weighted through ball, White latched onto it ahead of Haxhiu and the loanee crashed a shot across McDonald and in.
This result saw the two clubs swap league positions as Carshalton moved up to fifth ahead of a League Cup game at Margate on Tuesday 7th January (KO 7.45pm).
