Tommy Bradford came in for his first full start of the season and Kershaney Samuels also returned as Bobby Price and Christie Pattisson dropped to the bench.
The writing was on the wall from as early as 33 seconds – Dan Uchechi got on the end of a Chris Dickson cross, teed up Joe Christou and his mishit shot saw Kleton Perntreou change direction to prevent the ball crawling over the line.
Carshalton’s first real foray forward came on eight minutes but keeper Joseph Right clawed Jerry Amoo’s cross away from the oncoming Ricky Korboa.
Hornchurch captain Lewwis Spence almost wowed the crowd a minute later as he tried to dink a 40 yard effort over Perntreou, but the ball flew into the sidenetting.
The home side then carved out an opening as Tommy Bradford skilfully nodded down a long Daniel Pappoe in the visitors’ box, but Amoo took too many touches and he ran out of room to get off a shot.
But the opening goal came on 16 minutes as Matt Johnson intercepted a loose Bradford pass. He charged over halfway and played a one-two with Uchechi before angling a low drive past Perntreou.
Spence then tested Perntreou from 18 yards but the keeper punched the effort out, thankfully Mickey Parcell’s headed follow-up lacked power.
Carshalton were finding it difficult to breakdown an energetic Hornchurch side that hustled and harried at every opportunity, but Right was called into some serious action on 23 minutes.
Omar Koroma held up a long ball and found Amoo whose first-time cross was met by the head of Korboa, but Right acrobatically tipped the ball away.
Dickson had seven goals to his name before kick-off and he burst through on goal on 28 minutes, but he thumped the crossbar with a left-footed drive from 12 yards.
Hornchurch did double their lead a minute later however, Spence wasn’t picked up as George Saunders swung in a cross and he powered a header inside the near post.
Carshalton were up against it now - only Margate have scored twice against Hornchurch so far this season - but they reduced the arrears just two minutes later as Paris Hamilton-Downes' corner went in off Amoo at the far post.
That goal galvanised the home side for a spell – Korboa blasted over from 12 yards following a half-cleared free kick into the Hornchurch box, while Amoo took advantage of George Winn’s lapse in concentration on a square pass to burst clean through on goal. His attempted dink from 18 yards was blocked by Right and sadly Koroma slipped as he tried to get on the ball in front of goal.
The home side also won four corners in added time but couldn’t duplicate a route to goal like they had earlier.
HALF-TIME: 1 - 2
Carshalton started the second-half brightly but they found themselves two goals behind again on 51 minutes as Dickson met Parcell’s inswinging cross and powered a header over the dive of Perntreou.
The home side responded by making three substitutions by the hour mark but the visitors were still standing firm at the back and Korboa put a free header over on 65 minutes when Christie Pattisson’s free kick found him inside the box.
There was a let off a minute later as Johnson got Dickson in on goal and the striker tried to place the ball inside the bottom corner, but he put it just the wrong side of the upright.
But the game was put to bed with 15 minutes to go – Perntreou came out to head away a through ball intended for Dickson, but the ball dropped for Uchechi and the midfielder guided the ball back into the empty net from around 20 yards.
The Robins came close to grabbing a consolation in added time but Pattisson took too long on the ball inside the Hornchurch box and, under pressure, shot over the bar.
