It was a disappointing end to a local derby on Saturday as Carshalton lost at King George’s Field, writes James Barrett-Sterling.
Kingstonian 3 – 1 Carshalton Athletic Isthmian Premier League Saturday 25th January 2020 Attendance: 356 Last five results: WLWWL Our ‘Man of the Match’: Kershaney Samuels
Team news Jordan Cheadle and Peter Adeniyi dropped to the bench following the 3-2 win over Wingate and Finchley. Kershaney Samuels and Christie Pattisson came back in, while there was a place on the bench for long-term absentee Omar Koroma.
Kick-off Both sides made a bright start – Simon Cooper headed an early corner delivery not far off target, while Pattisson got on the end of Harry Ottaway’s sixth minute cross only to fire straight at keeper Rob Tolfrey.
But the deadlock was broken on the quarter hour – Eddie Dsane got onto a loose ball inside the Carshalton area. Kleton Perntreou decided to come out but couldn’t risk bringing the striker down and Dsane pulled the ball back to Dan Bennett whom slammed home his 11th of the season.
Ks defender Harry Osborne almost undone that good work five minutes later as, under pressure from Ricky Korboa, the centre back over-hit a back pass which had Tolfrey scampering, but the ball rolled the right side of the far post from his point of view.
Carshalton fell further behind however as Dsane supplied a good cross which Bennett cushioned back for Gus Sow whom rifled the ball in through a clutch of players.
The Robins tried to rally but they were left frustrated again by Tolfrey on 36 minutes – Paris Hamilton-Downes helped on a corner kick and Korboa deftly back-headed it goalwards, but the home keeper tipped it over at full stretch.
And Luke Read played Ottaway in two minutes later but the ball got stuck under the striker’s feet, allowing defenders to recover, so his eventual shot with his left foot rolled easily into Tolfrey’s hands.
HALF-TIME: 2 – 0
Ola Sogbanmu came on for the injured Daniel Pappoe at the start of the second-half, but it was Perntreou in early action as he palmed away a first-time drive from distance by Tom Kavanagh.
Carshalton forced a corner on 57 minutes which was half-cleared, but Tommy Bradford’s lofted effort back fell away over the far post.
Koroma came on for his first action since late November and it was one of his runs on 63 minutes that allowed Bradford space to play in Lewis White, but Tolfrey just got to the ball ahead of the flying midfielder.
And Read came close to getting his first goal for the club too with a powerful header on a free kick delivery, but Tolfrey sprang to palm the ball away off target.
But Kingstonian grabbed a third with 20 minutes to go – a poor pass by Hamilton-Downes inside his own half eventually led to a corner for the home side. Kavanagh saw an effort blocked failed to clear their lines, but Cooper this time smashed an effort through a crowd of players to cement his side’s lead.
Going further behind seemed to spark something in the Robins however and they dominated the remainder of the game, reducing the arrears with the best goal of the afternoon on 77 minutes.
Sub Ernold Haxhiu and Samuels combined to find Ottaway and he got the ball out to White whom, from 18 yards, smashed in angled drive past Tolfrey and inside the top far corner.
Two minutes later and Samuels played Haxhiu in over the top but Tolfrey got fingertips on his firm shot and he watched it fly past the far post.
And another big chance came on 84 minutes as Ottaway flicked on a long ball and Koroma bore down on goal. He had time to think about taking on an early shot or to try going round the oncoming Tolfrey – he decided on the latter, but the keeper managed to just get a hand on the ball to force the striker wide and allow defenders to get back in to cover.
The defeat, coupled with wins for Hornchurch and Cray Wanderers, means Carshalton slip down to sixth place in the Isthmian Premier League ahead of a trip to Haringey Borough on Monday 27th January (kick-off 7.45pm).
