The Robins won this feisty encounter by the odd goal in five against the league’s bottom club, writes James Barrett-Sterling.
Carshalton Athletic 3 – 2 Wingate and Finchley Isthmian Premier League Saturday 18th January 2020 Attendance: 448 Last five results: LWLWW Our ‘Man of the Match’: Kleton Perntreou
Team news There were three changes from the side that beat Lewes 1-0 last time out – match winner Christie Pattisson and Kershaney Samuels dropped to the bench, while Ernold Hsaxhiu missed out through illness. Player/boss Peter Adeniyi, skipper Paris Hamilton-Downes and Ricky Korboa all came in.
Kick-off The visitors belied their lowly league position by bossing the first-half and Kleton Perntreou had to be at his absolute best on 55 seconds to palm a Charlie Ruff header away at full stretch.
Carshalton failed to test Wingate keeper Shane Gore in the opening 45 minutes but they had a fair shout for a spot-kick on eight minutes – Richard Platt seemingly nudged Korboa over in the box but the referee waved away the calls.
And Wingate put the cat among the Robins on 18 minutes as, following a short corner routine, johnville Renee’s cross was met by Christian Forino-Joseph whom planted a free header past Perntreou.
The home tried to respond but both Jordan Cheadle, with a 35-yard free kick, and Korboa, whom did well to initially fashion some shooting space on 27 minutes, failed to hit the target.
Wingate came forward again a minute later and Olu Akinsanya played a neat one-two with Ruff to get beyond the Carshalton defence. His low cross was deflected to Olu Oluwatimilehin but, from 15 yards, his shot straight at Perntreou.
The Robins created one more chance before the break but, following good wrok by Korboa and Harry Ottaway, Lewis White fizzed the latter’s low cross over first-time from just inside the area.
HALF-TIME: 0 - 1
Carshalton made two substitutions at half-time - Ola Sogbanmu and Kershaney Samuels on for Danny Dudley and Cheadle - and a route back into the game came on 48 minutes.
White tumbled under the attentions of Platt and the referee pointed to the spot - a skirmish followed as the visitors were unhappy with the decision, but Hamilton-Downes kept his nerve to smash the ball in via Gore's outstretched leg. Wingate manager Spencer Knight was then also dismissed from the dug out for dissent.
Forino-Joseph was pumped up and he put in reckless tackles on White and Korboa, but it wasn't third time a charm when he flew into Sogbanmu - the defender came off worst and had to be replaced.
Carshalton took the lead just before the hour mark as Tommy Bradford found Adeniyi 18 yards from goal. The player/boss jinked his way past two opponents and his deflected shot beat the unfortunate Gore.
And Korboa got involved in the goals on 65 minutes, latching onto an Ottaway flick before bombing forward and dispatching a low shot inside the near post from the edge of the area.
That knocked the wind out of Wingate's sails but they managed to pull a goal back in added time - a combination of Luke Read and Korboa hauled down Olu Olawatimilehin during a corner kick delivery and Akinsanya sent Perntreou the wrong way from 12 yards.
The victory put Carshalton up into fourth in the league ahead of two away trips coming up later this month.
