Ottaway double reels in the Mackerels

Two goals from Harry Ottaway helped Carshalton Athletic overturn the form book with a 2-1 victory over Isthmian League Premier Division leaders, Worthing on Bank Holiday Monday.

The Mackerels arrived at Colston Avenue having opened a nine point gap at the top of the table after their most recent victory on New Year’s Day. From the start though, Carshalton showed their high-flying opponents they would be facing a very different team from the one that had lost to Corinthian Casuals two days previously.

Speaking after the game, first team coach Keith Boanas said: “After the Casuals game, we questioned the team’s mental strength and desire to work for each other, but they really responded today against a high quality side.”

Chances were at a premium as both teams went toe to toe in a lively encounter, with Kwaku Frimpong notably imposing his presence in midfield in his Robins’ debut after joining on loan from AFC Wimbledon.

Carshalton took the lead just after the half hour from a corner. Tommy Bradford’s inswinging delivery was met by Ola Sogbanmu and when his header cannoned off an unknowing Worthing defender, Ottaway was on hand to turn it into the roof of the net from close range.

Worthing’s best effort of the first 45 minutes came just before half time when a low cross from Jasper Pattenden just eluded two players charging in at the far post.

A matter of minutes after Lloyd Thomas had made a superb save from Calum Kealy on the hour, Ottaway claimed his second. After good work down each flank by Dan Bassett and Lewis White, Bradford found a pocket of space in the penalty area to lay off a well weighted pass into the path of Ottaway, whose low drive found the bottom corner from 20 yards.

As Worthing threw players forward in the last 10 minutes, Eze Ebuzoeme had to clear off the line after a corner. Kealy ensured a tense finish when he turned in Ollie Pearce’s cross, but Carshalton rode time out to claim the win.
