Robins hold back the Folkestone tide

Dan Bassett continued his excellent scoring run with an equalizer as Carshalton Athletic drew 1-1 with Folkestone Invicta on Saturday.

Folkestone entered the game with a point to prove after losing 5-0 to Carshalton in November at Colston Avenue – their first loss of the season at the time. And with a strong breeze on their backs in the first half, the fifth placed Seasiders pinned the Robins back for long periods without really threatening to score. Their best effort was when Ryan Johnson diverted a corner goalwards, drawing a fingertip save from Lloyd Thomas. At the other end, Dan Bennett’s shot went straight at Folkestone keeper, Tim Roberts, in a rare Robins’ foray forward.

Carshalton made a tactical switch at half time, bringing on Melos Ajvazi up front for his league debut in place of another league debutant, Malachai Hyman, in an effort to take advantage of the now helping breeze.

Ten minutes in to the second half though, the hosts took the lead when last week’s hatrick hero from Folkestone’s 7-0 romp over Potters Bar, Luke Wanadio, got free on the left and cut inside to shoot past Lloyd Thomas.

Only six minutes later, Carshalton were level. After good build up play down the left, Bassett made space on the corner of the penalty area to fire past Roberts into the far corner for his 17th goal of the season and his sixth in the last five games.

As the Robins committed more players forward in search of a go-ahead goal, they began to leave space for the home team to exploit. More than once in the last 15 minutes it looked like Folkestone had to score but the normally clinical front trio of Wanadio, and 20 goal strikers David Smith and Ade Yusuff gave the Robins a reprieve.

Speaking after the game, Carshalton coach Keith Boanas said: “Although we struggled at times with the pitch and conditions, when you come to places like this where a team is towards the top of the league, you want to at least come away with something. The players today never stopped working and battling to achieve that.”
