Table-topping Worthing ride in on crest of a wave

Updated: Jan 2

Carshalton Athletic’s first home game of 2022 will see them facing Isthmian League Premier Division leaders, Worthing, at Colston Avenue on Bank Holiday Monday 3rd January (3pm kick off).

After a sluggish start by their recent high standards, Worthing have been setting the pace in the division for some time. They opened up a nine-point gap at the top after a 3-1 win over Horsham on New Year’s Day, courtesy of three second half penalties.

The league’s leading scorer, Ollie Pearce, converted all three of those penalties taking his total to 24 in the league and 27 in all competitions so far this season, including 11 in the last five games. This put him 20 ahead of his nearest teammate, Dayshonne Golding.

This will be the first meeting between the two sides since the 2019-20 season was curtailed with Worthing topping the table by seven points with less than 10 games to play and the Robins lying in fifth place. In the two encounters that season, Worthing won 2-1 at Colston Avenue thanks to a last minute penalty (Lewis White scoring for the Robins) after an earlier 1-1 draw at Worthing in which Tommy Bradford scored Carshalton’s goal.

The Robins go into the game after a disappointing 2-1 defeat to Corinthian Casuals on New Year’s Day that dropped them to 11th place in the league table. Speaking after the game, Robins’ coach Alberto Kurti reiterated that the coaching staff believes that the squad is a match for any team when they play to their potential. He said: “Results in the league this season have shown that any team is capable of beating any other on the day, and we will go into Monday’s game looking for a positive performance and result.”
