Ten man Rocks snatch last gasp win

Updated: Feb 27

Carshalton Athletic went down to a 1-0 defeat at Isthmian League Premier Division bottom side East Thurrock United when home striker Johnny Ashman rolled in the winner with virtually the last kick of the game.

The dramatic finale was at odds with what had been an otherwise drab game on an uneven, bobbly surface.

Chances were few and far between as the hosts’ grit and determination snuffed out a decidedly lacklustre Carshalton. Speaking candidly after the game, Robins’ coach Keith Boanas said: “I think that is the worst performance and the lowest I’ve been after a game since I’ve been at the club.”

The Robins best efforts came in the first 20 minutes when first Dan Roberts’ goalbound shot was superbly blocked by experienced Rocks defender, Curtis Ujah, and then East Thurrock goalkeeper Arthur Janata had to back pedal quickly to tip over a deflection of a Dan Bennett free kick from one of his own players.

After a period of East Thurrock pressure in the second half, in which both Ashman and central defender Ryan Dear had decent efforts on goal, the home side looked to have lost their chance of a not undeserved winner when debutant Oli Coker was sent off for a second bookable offence six minutes from time.

But as Carshalton looked to press home their numerical advantage in the dying minutes and added time, Ashman latched on to a hopeful ball forward and prodded the ball past an onrushing Lloyd Thomas to scenes of delirium from the home bench and supporters.
