We've Met Before - Worthing

Last minute winners and drama seem to be the order of the day when these two teams meet with Worthing having much the better of it at Colston Avenue and the Robins more capable of holding their own away from home.

It wasn't always this way though, we first came across Worthing in the Corinthian League in the 50's and were regular winners against the Mackrel Men, sometimes racking up big scores (6-1 away in 51-52, 7-0 at home in 52-53 and 8-3, again at home in 53-54). We then met sporadically across the years but who can forget, if they were there, our all time record win of 13-0 in February 1991 when Jimmy Bolton scored seven goals as Worthing were dumped out of the Isthmian Full Members Cup.

More recent meetings have proved to much closer. In 2015-16 we lost at home after leading 2-0 at half time with Brannon O'Neill netting a 90th minute winner for Worthing. The reverse fixture in February resulted in a 2-2 draw with Tommy Bradford scoring twice from the spot. We did not meet in the League the following season as Worthing had by then been promoted to Isthmian Premier Division, after nearly going out of business in 2014-15. However, we were drawn away to them in the FA Cup and were leading 3-1 with minutes to go when midfielder Sekou Kaba received his marching orders. Cue a Worthing all out assault on the Robins goal which was breached in the 78 minute by Omar Bugiel. Could we hang on? The referee intervened when he awarded Worthing a controversial last minute (getting to see a theme developing?) penalty which Bugiel tucked away for his and Worthing's third. The replay two days later looked, again, to be going our way with Brendan Murphy-McVey putting us 2 up inside 25 mins. However a second half blitz from Worthing saw them score five second half goals to win 6-2.

Our League meetings resumed in 2018-19, losing 1-2 at home in the early part of the season, Ricky Korboa putting us 1-0 up but David Ajiboye's second half double in a minute saw Worthing steal the win. In the return fixture on the south coast we looked as though we were going to make up for the FA Cup disappointment of 2016-17 when were leading 3-2 (Tommy Bradford netting his 100th Robins goal) when up popped Jalen Jones, yes THAT Jalen Jones, to score a 90 minute equaliser for Worthing (there is definitely a theme developing here!).

For the truncated 2019-20 season we again lost 1-2 at home to a 90 minute goal from Lloyd Dawes after being put ahead through Lewis White (this is definitely a 'thing'!) but had returned from the South Coast earlier in the season with a 1-1 draw, courtesy of Tommy Bradford's 63 minute goal.

That brings us to this season where we inflicted on Worthing only their third League defeat of the season through a brace from Harry Ottaway. We may be the only team left capable of doing the double over Worthing this season, we could spoil the celebrations, providing there are no last minute dramas!

Played for both teams: Two of the current Robins squad have had brief spells on the South Coast with both Omar Koroma and Danny Pappoe making four appearances each in 2020-21. Sometime Robin from earlier this season Jalen Jones played 22 times for Worthing in 2018-19. Also making a single appearance for Worthing in 2018-19 before moving to Carshalton was Taofiq Olomowewe.
