White penalty downs Kingstonian

A Lewis White penalty midway through the second half earned Carshalton Athletic all three points on Monday night and ended Kingstonian’s winning start to 2022.

White coolly sent Serine Sanneh the wrong way after Kingstonian defender Jerry Puemo had been adjudged – harshly in the eyes of the K’s bench and travelling supporters - to have blocked Dan Bassett’s goalbound shot with his hand.

Carshalton first team coach, Keith Boanas, said after the game that despite the winner coming from the spot, he felt it was little more than the Robins deserved for another impressive team performance against promotion-chasing opponents.

Kingstonian came into the game unchanged from the team that had beaten Brightlingsea Regent at the weekend to thrust them into the final playoff spot in the Isthmian League Premier Division and on the back of a three-game winning streak in the new year.

Carshalton on the other hand had been forced to make one change with the departure of Ola Sogbanmu to a job overseas and were forced to rejig again just before the kick-off when new signing, Charlie Williams, pulled up in the warm-up with a tight hamstring – brother Brad Williams dropping into the centre of defence and Dan Bennett being promoted from the bench to start in midfield against his former club.

Unsurprisingly then, it was Kingstonian who made the more assured start, with 33 goal striker pairing of Daniel Ajakaiye and Elliott Buchanan looking lively in the early going. Carshalton’s makeshift defence stood firm, however, as clear chances for both sides remained hard to come by in the first half. Bassett and White went closest for the Robins with shots that were narrowly wide, while Kingstonian’s best effort was Kenny Beaney’s attempt to loft a shot over Lloyd Thomas from 30 yards on the stroke of half time.

After the break, the more rested Robins began to exert greater pressure. Before the penalty, a clever touch from Harry Ottaway put Bassett through to force a great save from Sanneh, who again had to be at his best to keep out a White shot after Carshalton had taken a short corner. Beaney nearly grabbed a goal for K’s when his clever chip from 35 yards cleared Thomas but went just wide.

When Sanneh picked up Ollie Cook’s back pass in the dying minutes, Luke Read’s shot from the free kick was a fraction wide of making it two for Carshalton, but the single goal was all they needed in the end to lay the ghost of never having beaten a team managed by Hayden Bird since he left the club.
