Robins Beat Chessington On Final Day
Carshalton Athletic continued their impressive recent run of form, winning 4–2 at Chessington & Hook United in their final league game of the season.
Manager Aaron Lamont made three changes from the side that beat Oxted & District 10–0 two weeks ago. Taylor McCrea, Suzanne Davies and Demi Allen all started in place of Remmi Gardner, Xaidan Gooding and Maisie Ward.
The game got underway on a warm afternoon in Chessington, and the Robins made a quick start, carving out their first opportunity within the opening two minutes. Honey Dulley made space for herself outside the box before letting fly, but her shot drifted wide of the post.
Chessington were also searching for an early goal and nearly found one when Nadia Peters was played through on goal after seven minutes. However, Beth Yarrow was alert in the Carshalton goal and got down well to make the save.
The Robins were putting together some neat passing moves, and link-up play between Badley and Dulley nearly led to the opener. Thirteen minutes into the contest, Dee Badley laid the ball back to Honey Dulley, who struck a low effort at goal, but the Chessington goalkeeper was well positioned and held onto the strike.
That chance proved a warning, and the Robins opened the scoring on 16 minutes. Leanne Bell played a long ball over the top, which Dee Badley raced onto. The Robins forward made no mistake, firing the ball into the bottom corner to make it 1–0 to Carshalton.
Badley had been in a season-long race for the division’s Golden Boot with Dorking forward Holly Crane, with both players sitting on 26 goals going into this game (across the Surrey Premier Division and Surrey Divisional Cup). With Dorking’s season already over, Badley knew one more goal would secure the accolade – and she did so in typically clinical fashion.
The Robins continued to press and doubled their advantage on 19 minutes. Dee Badley, fresh from scoring just minutes earlier, was played through again and smashed the ball past the Chessington goalkeeper to make it 2–0.
Carshalton were firmly on top and made it three after 32 minutes. Kenza Gueriani worked the ball well down the right-hand side and looked to deliver into the box. Her cross caught the Chessington goalkeeper out and, despite getting a touch, she could not keep the ball out, with the Robins now leading 3–0.
Carshalton added a fourth on 35 minutes. Gueriani was again making good progress down the right and delivered another ball into the penalty area. This time it found Dee Badley at the far post, who turned it home to complete her hat-trick and make it 4–0.
Despite going four goals down, Chessington rallied and pulled one back shortly after Badley’s third. Gabriella Hobday did well on the left-hand side to beat her marker and struck an effort at goal. Beth Yarrow got a strong hand to it, but the ball looped into the air, allowing Nadia Peters to ensure it crossed the line and reduce the deficit to 4–1.
Just before half-time, Badley and McCrea linked up well, with Badley laying the ball off to McCrea. The young forward went for goal but saw her effort drift wide, with the referee blowing for half-time shortly after.
The second half got underway with the Robins looking for more goals. Suzanne Davies played a pinpoint through ball to Honey Dulley, who raced through on goal. However, the Chessington goalkeeper reacted well, rushing out to close the angle and getting down to push the ball away.
Chessington then had a big chance to reduce the arrears on 67 minutes. The ball was cut back to Nadia Peters, who looked set to score, but she was unable to find the target. She made amends a few minutes later, however, when she was slipped through on goal and calmly poked the ball past Beth Yarrow to make it 4–2, setting up a nervy finish for the Robins.
Carshalton had further opportunities before the end. On 74 minutes, Badley found herself in a promising position and fired a powerful effort at goal, but the Chessington goalkeeper did well to tip it away. Badley went close again moments later after getting on the end of a deflected cross, but inexplicably fired over the crossbar. The linesman’s flag was already raised, however, so the goal would not have counted.
After 90 minutes, the referee blew for full-time, confirming a 4–2 victory for the Robins in their final league game of the season. Despite dropping just six points all season, Carshalton have finished second in the league, but will be hoping for promotion at the end of the campaign.
Attention now turns to the Surrey Divisional Cup final on Sunday 10th May, where the Robins will face Milford & Witley at Meadowbank as they look to defend the title they won last year.
