Robins Beat Hackney
Carshalton Athletic Women secured their first-ever win at Tier 6 with an 8-1 victory over Hackney on Sunday afternoon.
Manager Georgie Edwards made two changes to the side that lost to Hollands & Blair last weekend. Demi Allen and Taylor McCrea returned to the starting line-up, while Emily McCarthy and Shereece Duncan missed out.
Carshalton got the game underway and made the perfect start. From the first move of the game, Dee Badley was played the ball on the right-hand side. She whipped the ball into the area and found Taylor McCrea. The ball then bounced kindly for Remmi Gardner, who was able to poke the ball home to make it 1-0. The goal came within the first 20 seconds and was likely one of Carshalton Athletic Women’s fastest-ever goals.
Just a few minutes later, the Robins doubled their advantage. In the 3rd minute, the Robins played a quick through ball over the top. Dee Badley raced onto it and, when one-on-one with the goalkeeper, fired the ball home to make it 2-0, netting her first competitive goal of the season in the process.
The Robins had started well and were pushing to increase their advantage. Carshalton had a couple of opportunities to score a third. Kaydence Kabadaki sent in a pinpoint cross from the right-hand side, which found McCrea in the middle. She headed the ball towards goal, but it was blocked by a defender. Shortly after, Remmi Gardner had a chance to net her second goal of the game, but fired over from just outside the box.
The Robins had the majority of the play in the opening stages, but still had to be alert to threats from the hosts. In the 17th minute, Hackney broke free in the box, but Beth Yarrow was able to close the angle and save a shot from a Hackney forward with her feet.
In the 24th minute, Carshalton made it 3-0. Taylor McCrea was able to lay the ball off to Remmi Gardner, who fired the ball low and beat the Hackney goalkeeper, putting the Robins 3-0 to the good.
Not long after, it was 4-0. In the 31st minute, Honey Dulley stepped up and smashed the ball home from outside the penalty area. It was a scintillating strike that found the top corner – the pick of the goals on a brilliant day for the Robins.
In the 35th minute, the Robins made it 5-0. Dee Badley was played through and, with plenty of time, slotted the ball home to net her second goal of the game and make it 5-0.
Hackney were still threatening and nearly took advantage of a slight mix-up at the back, but Shauna Doherty was able to get back into position to make a crucial block and stop the hosts from getting a goal back.
The referee blew his whistle for half-time, and manager Georgie Edwards would have been happy to have got off to such a brilliant start.
The Robins would have been confident that the game was all wrapped up, but showed no signs of slowing down. In the 50th minute, Kaydence Kabadaki found herself in a good position, but poked her effort just wide after the goalkeeper closed the angle.
Kabadaki was involved again a few minutes later. Remmi Gardner played a clever through ball to Kabadaki on the right. Carshalton’s new signing struck from a tight angle, but her shot was pushed away by the Hackney goalkeeper.
The Robins got their sixth in the 58th minute. Taylor McCrea found herself in a promising position in the final third and curled a shot at goal. The Hackney goalkeeper got a touch on it, but it wasn’t enough to keep it out, as the ball sneaked in at the far post, putting the Robins 6-0 to the good.
In the 63rd minute, Carshalton made it 7-0. Shauna Doherty made a great run from right-back to break into the box. She hit her shot across the Hackney goalkeeper, with the effort hitting the inside of the far post and going in. That was Doherty’s first competitive goal for the Robins, and Carshalton now had a 7-0 lead.
After netting twice already, Dee Badley was looking to complete her hat-trick. Last season’s Golden Boot winner saw a powerful effort pushed away by the Hackney goalkeeper, before her follow-up was blocked by a defender. Honey Dulley was also looking for another goal after her stunning strike earlier in the game. Dulley struck a dipping effort from range, but this time the effort was tipped away for a corner.
The Robins did find an eighth in the 79th minute. After being denied earlier in the game, Kaydence Kabadaki caught the Hackney goalkeeper off her line and hit a looping effort from just outside the box into the back of the net to make it 8-0.
Despite being 8-0 behind, Hackney never gave up and continued to play positively throughout the game. The hosts were rewarded in the 85th minute as they were able to take advantage of a rare defensive lapse from the Robins, and a Hackney forward was able to coolly slot the ball past Beth Yarrow to make it 8-1.
After a brief period of stoppage time, the referee blew the whistle for full-time to confirm Carshalton Athletic Women’s first-ever victory at Tier 6. Manager Georgie Edwards will know that there will be tougher tests to come, but she can be proud of the performance of her side as they bounced back from last weekend’s FA Cup exit.
Up next, the Robins have a weekend off before returning to league action on Sunday 13th September, with an away trip to the Gallagher Stadium to take on Maidstone United.
