Robins Beaten At Dulwich

Carshalton Athletic Women slipped to a 4 – 0 defeat against a strong Dulwich Hamlet Reserves side at Green Dale Fields on Sunday afternoon.

Manager Georgie Edwards made two changes to the side that lost to Maidstone last time out. Edwards deputised in goal in place of Beth Yarrow, while Aisha Douglin came into the starting XI in place of Kaydence Kabadaki.

The game got underway, and the Robins started brightly. On four minutes, Carshalton had the first chance of the game. A ball over the top found its way to Dee Badley. The Robins forward struck for goal, but couldn’t keep her effort down as it sailed over the crossbar.

Dulwich then started to grow into the game and nearly took the lead themselves. A Dulwich forward was played through on goal and hit a powerful effort towards goal. The shot looked destined for the net, but rattled the crossbar, and the Robins were eventually able to clear.

Dulwich were starting to gain the upper hand and had a couple of chances to open the scoring. Firstly, a Dulwich attacker hit a shot at goal from just outside the penalty area, but Edwards was able to hold onto it.

Just a few minutes later, Edwards was called into action again, this time being forced into a save with her feet, with the Robins defence eventually getting the ball clear.

However, in the 12th minute, Dulwich took the lead. A backpass from the Robins was intercepted by a Dulwich forward, who was able to slot the ball home to make it 1 – 0.

It was a sucker punch for the Robins, and Dulwich doubled their advantage on 16 minutes. A ball in from the left-hand side was kicked away by Edwards in the Carshalton goal, but only as far as a Dulwich forward, who was able to fire the ball home to make it 2 – 0.

Carshalton were looking for a way back into the game and nearly found one in the 21st minute when Abbie Measures hit an effort from distance. The Dulwich goalkeeper looked beaten, but the ball crashed against the crossbar and was cleared.

Dulwich continued to keep the pressure on as the first half wore on, with the hosts regularly getting balls into the Carshalton penalty area. They created a number of half chances, with efforts going over and wide of the target as the Robins continued to defend their box and look for a way to relieve the pressure.

The referee blew his whistle for half time, with Dulwich 2 – 0 ahead. The Robins knew that they had work to do in the second half to get back into the game.

The second half got underway, and Dulwich scored their third goal of the game on 57 minutes. The hosts won a free kick on the left-hand side, just outside the box. Dulwich crossed the ball into the penalty area, where it was met by the head of a Dulwich player, whose header beat Edwards and found the back of the net to make it 3 – 0.

That goal took the stuffing out of Carshalton. The Robins continued to work hard and tried to find a way back into the game, but they were unable to carve out any clear-cut scoring opportunities, such was the strength of the Dulwich defence. The hosts were now in control of the game, dictating the play and keeping the Robins at arm’s length.

With the game into stoppage time, the Robins were reduced to 10 players. Carshalton won a corner on the right-hand side and were looking to try and get a goal back. The ball was delivered into the penalty area, but the referee blew his whistle for a foul by Taylor McCrea, and the Robins forward was shown a straight red card, leaving Carshalton with a player disadvantage for the final few minutes of the game.

Dulwich were able to take advantage of this with nearly the last kick of the game. After Georgie Edwards made an initial save, a Dulwich forward was able to pounce on the rebound and fire the ball home to make it 4 – 0.

The referee blew his whistle for full time, with Dulwich running out 4 – 0 winners. For Carshalton, it was a better overall performance than last week’s defeat at Maidstone, but they came up against a strong Dulwich side who showed why they are top of the league by putting in a disciplined performance, keeping it tight at the back and limiting Carshalton’s opportunities.

The result moves Carshalton down a place to eighth in the league. However, the Robins have had a tough opening schedule, with four consecutive away games against some of the stronger sides in the division. Edwards and the rest of her management team will be pleased to see that they have three consecutive home games coming up and will be looking to build momentum in front of the home support at Colston Avenue.

Up next, the Robins have their first home league game of the season on Sunday, hosting Ebbsfleet United at Colston Avenue.
