Robins Cruising Against Tonbridge

Carshalton put in a comprehensive performance at Colston Avenue to beat fellow seventh-tier side Tonbridge Angels 11–1 in the Robins’ final pre-season game before competitive action kicks off next week.

Aaron Lamont had a strong squad to choose from, with Yarrow starting in goal and a solid back three of captain Georgie Edwards, Ward and Nebbitt, as the Robins looked to keep things tight. Last season’s top scorer, Heather Eade, led the line as Carshalton looked to add to the 12 goals they had scored in their previous two games against Chessington and Tooting Bec.

The first chance of the game fell to the home side, with Heather Eade finding space, but her shot flashed wide.

Tonbridge then had a spell of chances. A mix-up at the back gave the Kent side an opportunity, and with Yarrow seemingly beaten, captain Georgie Edwards put her body on the line to make a vital challenge, sending the ball out for a corner. A half-chance followed in the 11th minute, with Tonbridge finding space down the left. The ball was played across the face of goal, but the striker couldn’t quite stretch far enough to connect.

In the 14th minute, the away side took the lead. Tonbridge’s striker was slipped through and, with time on her side, slotted the ball home. Carshalton hadn’t quite got going yet, but the goal served as the spark they needed.

Two minutes later, the Robins were level. A sliced clearance fell kindly to Sarah Chapman, who controlled a first-time volley past the Tonbridge goalkeeper.

Just minutes after that, Carshalton had turned the game around – Trialist 14 delivered a pinpoint corner to Ward, who met it with a strong header to make it 2–1.

Carshalton were now starting to find their rhythm and made it 3–1 in the 21st minute. Trialist 14 picked up the ball and unleashed a powerful effort from 25 yards that beat the Tonbridge keeper. Four minutes later, it was 4–1. A brilliant delivery from the marauding Bianca Underhill was turned in by Badley.

The Robins continued to push. Trialist 14 had a free-kick blocked by the wall, then won the ball back and fired just over. Heather Eade also had the ball in the back of the net, but the referee ruled it out.

Just before half-time, Trialist 14 grabbed her second of the game. In a similar fashion to her first, she picked up the ball outside the box, beat a defender, and smashed it into the top corner.

The second half began with Tonbridge trying to respond. A good move down the right led to a ball into the box, where the striker got a shot away, but it went just wide of the far post.

In the 60th minute, Carshalton made it six. Underhill again caused problems down the right and whipped in a cross that Heather Eade headed home. Substitute Honey Dulley added a seventh soon after being introduced, calmly slotting the ball past the keeper after being played through.

Despite the scoreline, Tonbridge continued to battle and push forward. Substitute goalkeeper McNulty was called into action twice. First, she made a solid save before Rodrigues cleared the danger. The second chance was even more dangerous, as a Tonbridge striker bore down on goal, but McNulty again produced a strong stop.

As the game drew to a close, captain Georgie Edwards got forward and steered home Carshalton’s eighth goal. Then forward Taylor McCrea, recently introduced from the bench, was played through, rounded the goalkeeper, and tapped into an empty net for number nine.

Into injury time, Carshalton weren’t done. They added two more goals from set pieces in quick succession. A corner from the right was whipped in, and Badley rose to head home.

Moments later, a low free kick from the left by Georgie Edwards beat everyone – including the goalkeeper – as it curled directly into the bottom corner.

The referee called time on the game, and manager Aaron Lamont will have been pleased with his side’s display ahead of a big FA Cup qualifying match at South London FC next weekend. With the players gelling well and substitutes making a strong impact, the Robins will be confident that, if they can replicate this performance, they stand a good chance of progressing to the next round.
