Robins Draw At Cray Wanderers

Carshalton Athletic put in an improved performance to secure a hard-fought 1–1 draw away at play-off-chasing Cray Wanderers.

Following last weekend’s 4–0 home defeat to Chatham Town, manager Peter Adeniyi made just one change to his starting XI, with Matias Bakare coming into the side in place of Sanchez Ming.

The match got underway with plenty at stake for both sides. The Robins started the day in 17th place, just one point above the relegation zone, while Cray Wanderers sat 6th, only two points off the play-off places. The hosts had the first chance of the afternoon after three minutes, playing a good ball forward to Harry Bridle. He worked his way into the Carshalton penalty area, but Matt Kerbey reacted quickly, getting down well to claim the ball before Bridle could shoot.

Carshalton responded with a half-chance a minute later. Some neat passing from the Robins saw Fabio Saraiva loop a ball back into the box, finding Kola Salami, whose header drifted wide. The Robins were passing the ball around confidently, and Salami was again involved on 11 minutes, firing in a shot from the edge of the penalty area that was held well by Harry Seaden.

Carshalton then had a shout for a penalty when Bryan Ifeanyi went to ground inside the area, but referee Derrick Laing was unconvinced and instead showed Ifeanyi a yellow card for simulation. At the other end, Cray Wanderers were also putting together some tidy passing moves. Jordy Mongoy teed up Harry Waldock, who struck a volley towards goal from just outside the box, but Kerbey was able to hold the effort at his near post.

The Robins took the lead on 20 minutes. A corner on the left was taken by Saraiva, with his delivery travelling through to the back post. Luke Read then played a low ball back into the danger area, and his pinpoint pass picked out former Cray Wanderers defender Ben Mundele, who turned the ball home to score his first goal in a Carshalton shirt.

It was an excellent start for the Robins, but Cray Wanderers equalised seven minutes later. The hosts won a free kick on the right, which Frankie Raymond delivered into the box with an in-swinging left-footed cross. The ball was allowed to bounce before Kerbey got a hand to it, tipping it into the path of ex-Carshalton defender Quade Taylor. Taylor’s header struck the crossbar and fell kindly to Harry Bridle, who nodded home the rebound to score his first goal for Cray Wanderers and make it 1–1. Interestingly, it was Bridle’s second goal against the Robins this season, after the Gillingham loanee had already found the net against them in October during another loan spell with Whitehawk.

With Bridle’s goal cancelling out Mundele’s opener, there were a few more chances before half-time. On 36 minutes, the hosts attacked again as Frankie Morgan found Jordy Mongoy inside the left side of the penalty area, but his effort flew into the side netting. Cray then won a corner from the left, delivered by Raymond to the back post, where Quade Taylor met it with a header, though Kerbey did well to claim the ball.
In first-half stoppage time, Ifeanyi was brought down on the edge of the area. Saraiva placed the ball just outside the D and attempted to curl his effort into the top corner, but the shot was straight at Seaden.

The sides went into the break level at 1–1, a scoreline that fairly reflected a competitive first half in which both teams passed the ball well and created chances.

The second half began with few opportunities in the early stages. On 51 minutes, Mongoy did well down the left and delivered a dangerous ball into the box towards Alex Hernandez, but Kerbey was alert and claimed to keep the scores level. On 69 minutes, the ball was worked to Raymond, who again delivered a good cross towards Hernandez. The forward was well positioned but guided his header just wide of the post.

Carshalton posed a threat themselves and won a succession of corners to apply pressure on the hosts. On 79 minutes, a Saraiva corner from the left was put on a plate for Salami, but the Robins forward glanced his header wide of the far post.

Three minutes later, Carshalton went close again as substitute Tolu Ladapo drove forward down the left, cut inside onto his right foot and struck a shot towards goal. However, the effort lacked the power to truly test Seaden, who saved comfortably.

As time ran out, Cray Wanderers thought they had found a winner. With 89 minutes on the clock, a ball was played in from the left and Mongoy turned it home, but the flag was raised for offside and the score remained level.

Carshalton then had their best chance of the second half two minutes into stoppage time. Substitutes Rzeznik and Ladapo combined down the left, with Ladapo slipping the ball through to Rzeznik, who bore down on goal as Seaden narrowed the angle. Rzeznik struck a powerful effort,

but Seaden got down well to save with his feet.

Both sides continued to battle until the referee eventually blew for full time, with each team having to settle for a point. Cray Wanderers stay in 6th place, but close the gap to the play-off places after three of the teams above them suffered defeats. Carshalton remain in 17th place following the draw but are now two points clear of the relegation zone. The Robins move ahead of Wingate & Finchley, though they have been overtaken by Hashtag United, who picked up three points against Welling.
