Robins Four Unbeaten After Canvey Draw

Carshalton Athletic played out a hard-fought 2–2 draw with Canvey Island to extend their unbeaten league run to four games.

For the first time this season, manager Peter Adeniyi named an unchanged starting XI, clearly pleased with what he saw last weekend when the Robins beat Potters Bar 2–0.

The game kicked off, and it couldn’t have started much worse for the Robins. The home side played a ball over the top which wasn’t dealt with by the Carshalton defence. The ball fell kindly to Max Fiddes, who lobbed Kerbey to give the hosts the lead with only three minutes on the clock.

After the goal, Carshalton were able to settle into the game and had their first chance on 20 minutes. Bryan Ifeanyi curled an effort towards goal from outside the box,

but it was saved comfortably by Barrett.

On 24 minutes, the Robins equalised. Kola Salami was played through, using his pace to drive towards goal, and fired his shot past the onrushing Barrett, the ball finding the net off the underside of the crossbar.

The Robins continued to push forward after the equaliser, with Ifeanyi testing Barrett again from range. Saraiva then got forward and got a shot off, but his effort was straight at Barrett. Carshalton’s best chance to take the lead came through Luke Read, whose effort from outside the box was destined for goal, but Barrett tipped it over the bar. The half-time whistle followed shortly after.

Into the second half, it was the hosts who had the first chance, with goalscorer Fiddes firing a shot over the bar.

The Robins then had a shout for a red card when Salami was brought down outside the box by goalkeeper George Barrett, but the referee only brandished a yellow, judging that Salami’s touch had been a bit heavy, which would have left him with a tough angle had he not been fouled. From the resulting free-kick, Saraiva fired towards goal,

and his effort was tipped over the bar.

Despite Carshalton having the better of things, the Robins went behind again on 67 minutes. Kerbey appeared to be fouled when coming to collect a cross, but the referee didn’t signal for it, and Fiddes looped the ball over the stranded goalkeeper for his second of the game.

Carshalton weren’t content to leave empty-handed and pushed forward for an equaliser. From a free-kick, Luke Read appeared to be brought down in the box, but nothing was given.

On 85 minutes, the Robins’ pressure finally told. A ball from the right-hand side by Joshua Shonibare was turned in by a Canvey defender after pressure from Noah Nzuzi, the Robins equalising for a 2nd time.

Both sides continued to push forward, but the referee eventually called time on the contest, with both teams settling for a point.

Attention now turns to Tuesday night, as the Robins make the trip to The Dripping Pan to take on Lewes.
