Robins Win At Walton & Hersham
Carshalton Athletic made it six wins in a row with a 6–1 victory at Walton & Hersham, a result that keeps the pressure on at the top of the table.
Manager Aaron Lamont made three changes to the side that faced Croydon FC two weeks ago. Maisie Ward and Xaidan Gooding returned in place of Suzanne Davies and Leanne Bell, while Lauren Allen came back in between the sticks, with Beth Yarrow dropping to the bench.
The game got underway on a mild afternoon, and the Robins created the first opportunity after five minutes. Carshalton won a corner on the left-hand side, taken by Bianca Underhill. The delivery found Maisie Ward at the back post, and her effort struck the upright. On 10 minutes, the visitors had a fantastic chance to open the scoring. Dee Badley was played through on goal and fired a powerful effort that beat the goalkeeper but crashed against the crossbar before being cleared.
Badley had another opportunity on 18 minutes. Slipped in once again, she went one-on-one with the Walton & Hersham goalkeeper. Her shot was well struck, but the Swans’ keeper did well to save with her feet.
On 24 minutes, Ward played a long ball from deep into the penalty area. After bouncing in the box, it reached Underhill, who attempted to slot it into the far corner, but her effort drifted just wide.
Carshalton had been knocking on the door and finally took a deserved lead on 30 minutes. Gooding played a pinpoint through ball that was latched onto by Badley, and the former Croydon forward made no mistake this time,
firing into the bottom corner to make it 1–0.
The Robins remained on top and doubled their advantage on 40 minutes. Ward delivered a brilliant ball over the top to release Badley through on goal. Showing great composure, she smashed the ball into the corner to make it 2–0 and claim her second goal of the game.
Just before half-time, the Robins struck again. The ball was played to Badley in a good position on the left-hand side. Despite being one goal away from a hat-trick, she unselfishly squared it to Honey Dulley, who was in acres of space.
Dulley took a touch and fired home to make it 3–0, with the referee blowing for half-time shortly after.
Lamont would have been the happier of the two managers at the break, with his side producing some excellent passages of play. However, he may have felt they could have taken an even greater advantage into half-time had they converted more of their chances.
The Robins made a quick start to the second half, scoring again on 47 minutes. After netting just before the interval, Dulley turned provider, crossing from the right-hand side. The delivery found Taylor McCrea in the middle,
and the young forward headed home to make it 4–0.
Carshalton continued to push for more and went close on 57 minutes when Kenza Gueriani threaded a clever through ball to Dulley, who was through on goal but saw her effort trickle wide. McCrea then had a one-on-one opportunity on 70 minutes and looked certain to make it 5–0, but she fired wide.
Ward did make it 5–0 on 83 minutes. The Robins won a free-kick just outside the penalty area, and Ward stepped up to strike it powerfully. The Walton & Hersham goalkeeper stood no chance as the ball flew into the top corner,
capping a fine individual performance.
Carshalton were not finished and added a sixth on 85 minutes. Gooding played an excellent through ball to Dulley, who composed herself before firing a low effort past the goalkeeper for her second goal of the game.
Despite being largely untroubled after a solid defensive display, Walton & Hersham grabbed a consolation in the final minute. A ball over the top was not dealt with, allowing a Swans forward to poke it past the onrushing Yarrow to give the hosts something to show for their efforts. The referee blew for full-time shortly after, with the match ending 6–1 to Carshalton.
The result moves Carshalton up to second, as Sutton United Reserves were held to a 1–1 draw at Oxted & District. League leaders Dorking Wanderers remain three points clear following a 4–1 win over Croydon FC.
Next up is a break from league action, as the Robins host Dorking Wanderers U23s in the semi-finals of the Surrey Divisional Cup at Colston Avenue – a trophy Lamont’s side won last season.
