Thank You, Skipper: A Tribute to Paris Hamilton-Downes

After 14 remarkable years at Colston Avenue, Carshalton Athletic can confirm that Club Captain Paris Hamilton-Downes will be moving on this summer, having agreed to join a new club. His departure marks the end of an era for the Robins, one defined by loyalty, leadership, and unforgettable moments.

Chairman Paul Dipre paid tribute to Hamilton-Downes, saying:
“Paris is truly one in a million — a fantastic person both on and off the pitch. He’s been a student, a player, a captain, and a valued member of staff. His commitment to Carshalton Athletic has been exceptional at every level. I have nothing but the highest praise and deepest thanks for everything he’s given to the club.”

Manager Peter Adeniyi followed suit and added an emotional farewell: “It’s hard to find the right words that truly do justice to just how much I value, respect, and love Paris. Over the course of more than a decade at this club, he’s built an incredible legacy that speaks for itself. To have spent so many years here is no small feat, but what Paris has done for Carshalton goes far beyond the time he’s put in — he’s been a leader, a role model, and, most importantly, a true member of the Carshalton family.

From the very first time I had the privilege of playing alongside you, Paris, your passion, commitment, and determination were undeniable. That’s why when I became manager, it was an easy decision to name you captain. You’ve been the heartbeat of our team, always leading by example and putting the collective above all else. You’ve taught the younger players what it truly means to wear the Carshalton shirt, and your influence — both on and off the pitch — will be felt for years to come.

You’ve been an extraordinary servant to this club. In all the time I’ve known you, there’s never been a moment when I felt you gave anything less than 100%. Whether it was throwing your body on the line for the team or pushing through the toughest of moments, you’ve been the definition of commitment.

You’ve been there through the highs — like lifting the league winners trophy — and the lows, and every time, you’ve faced each challenge with unmatched professionalism and resilience. The standard you’ve set is one I hope every future player will aim to reach. Your legacy here is already cemented, and the foundation you’ve helped build will carry on through the generations of players that follow.

It’s hard to imagine the place without seeing that familiar smiling face, but we send you off with nothing but our deepest respect and blessings. Though it’s tough to see you go, we know this next chapter is just part of your journey, and we wish you nothing but success. You’ll always have a place here, and Carshalton will always be a part of your story.

On behalf of everyone — the players, the staff, and the supporters — thank you for everything. Your impact has been immeasurable, and you will be missed more than words can express.

Best of luck in everything that comes next and remember — you’ll always have a home here.”

Paris is not just the longest-serving player in the current squad; he is a living embodiment of what it means to wear the red and white. Having come through the very first year of our academy in 2011, his journey has been nothing short of inspirational. From promising academy graduate to captain and club legend, Paris has given everything to Carshalton Athletic.

Official records show 261 senior appearances since 2016-17, but when you include earlier unrecorded seasons, his tally comfortably surpasses 300. That kind of longevity, in non-league football especially, is extraordinary. Add to that over 30 goals, including a standout 2019-20 campaign in which he netted nine, and it is clear just how impactful he has been at both ends of the pitch.

His influence was not just in statistics. Paris was a rock at the back, a leader in the dressing room, and a player who rose to the big occasion time and again. Whether at left back, centre back, central midfield or coming on to steady the ship, he always gave everything for the badge. He captained the side to the Isthmian South title and promotion in 2017-18, and then to a runners-up finish in the Isthmian Premier the very next season — milestones that will not be forgotten anytime soon.

Who could forget his composure under pressure against Dorking Wanderers in 2017, converting two penalties in a thrilling 3-3 draw when others had faltered? Or that towering header that sent the Robins through to the FA Trophy second round against the same opponents in December 2019, a goal that sparked scenes of jubilation. There was the curling effort against Leatherhead, the thunderbolt from 25 yards against Corinthian-Casuals, the scrappy winner against Wingate & Finchley, and that unbelievable 98th-minute equaliser versus Hendon.

Even in the 2022-23 season when injury ruled him out, his presence was still felt. Off the pitch, Paris was always there to lift the squad, guide younger players, and keep standards high. His leadership was unwavering, his voice constant.

And of course, we cannot forget his trademark protests at refereeing decisions — always passionate, often theatrical — earning him a collection of 61 yellow cards. Every one of them, however, a symbol of his commitment and competitive edge.

Paris Hamilton-Downes leaves behind a legacy that will live long in the memory of everyone associated with Carshalton Athletic. He has been more than a player. He has been a leader, a role model, and above all, a true Robin.

Many of you will have seen Paris on Saturday mornings, sharing his knowledge and passion with the next generation during our Soccer Skills sessions — always full of energy before heading off for matchday duties. He’s never too busy for a chat with the Robins faithful, and his connection with supporters has been as genuine as it is appreciated. It was also a joy to see him and his partner welcome their child earlier this season, a special moment for a special member of the Carshalton family.

Thank you, Paris, for the tackles, the goals, the passion, and the years of unwavering service. We wish you every success in your next chapter. You will always have a home at Colston Avenue.
