CAFC vs St Albans City – Preview
Following Saturday’s draw against Aveley, the Robins return to Colston Avenue this weekend to take on St Albans City in their final game of the season.
Carshalton Athletic
It has been a tough season for Carshalton Athletic. The Robins started well, opening the campaign with a 2–0 win over Cray Valley PM at the Artic Stadium, thanks to goals from Bryan Ifeanyi and Tommy Bradford. They followed that up a week later with a 1–0 victory over Billericay.
The Robins suffered an early FA Cup exit, narrowly losing 3–2 at Wingate & Finchley in a replay during a seven-game winless run. However, they bounced back with consecutive wins over Burgess Hill Town (4–2) and Welling United (2–1).
Cup competitions proved difficult for Carshalton. They exited the FA Trophy at the first hurdle with a 2–1 defeat to Cheshunt, were knocked out of the Surrey Senior Cup on penalties at AFC Whyteleafe, and suffered a 3–0 home defeat to Binfield in the Isthmian League Cup.
The Robins did put together a six-game unbeaten run in the league between late October and mid-November. This included draws against Hashtag United (2–2), Ramsgate (2–2), Canvey Island (2–2), and Aveley (1–1), along with wins over Potters Bar Town (2–0) and a thrilling 3–2 victory at Lewes’ Dripping Pan.
However, following that win at Lewes, Carshalton endured a 16-game winless run. During this period, manager Peter Adeniyi stepped down, with Steven Bates taking over.
Bates’ first three games in charge all ended in defeat – against Ramsgate (2–1), Welling United (2–1), and Potters Bar Town (2–1). However, he ended the club’s barren spell at the beginning of March with a 3–1 win over Canvey Island at Colston Avenue. This was followed by a 1–0 victory at Cheshunt and an impressive 4–1 win over Wingate & Finchley.
Carshalton made it 10 points from four games in March with a 3–3 draw away at league leaders Folkestone. The hosts took the lead through Ben Mason, but the Robins responded with three first-half goals from Ryan Huke, Tolu Ladapo, and Nathan Young-Coombes.
Folkestone improved after the break and responded through Liam Smith and Ryan Kingsford. Carshalton had to withstand a late onslaught but held on for what could prove to be a crucial point in the battle for survival.
The Robins then hosted play-off-chasing Dartford and led at half-time thanks to Ryan Huke’s 38th-minute strike. Dartford turned the game around through Sam Odaudu and Rohan Vaughan to lead 2–1. Just as it seemed Carshalton would leave empty-handed, Denzel Akyeampong’s stoppage-time cross was headed home by Fabio Saraiva to secure a 2–2 draw.
A quick turnaround followed, with a short trip to face Dulwich Hamlet on Easter Monday. The match got off to the worst possible start, as former Robin David Smith scored inside the opening minute, and Anthony Jeffrey doubled the hosts’ lead after 25 minutes. Carshalton pulled one back through Nathan Young-Coombes in the 59th minute but were unable to find an equaliser, as Dulwich secured a 2–1 win.
Carshalton then hosted play-off-chasing Brentwood Town. The Robins took the lead after 15 minutes through Luke Read, but were pegged back almost immediately by an own goal. Brentwood went ahead in the 54th minute through Kymani Thomas, before Carshalton responded to make it 2–2 when Ladapo’s delivery was turned into the net by a Brentwood defender. However, Brentwood capitalised on their pressure, with Thomas scoring again to make it 3–2, before Daniel Ogunleye sealed a 4–2 victory in stoppage time.
Last time out, Carshalton travelled to Essex to face Aveley. Despite the hosts sitting second in the league, the Robins produced a determined performance to secure a 0–0 draw and pick up a valuable point.
Carshalton have one game remaining this season, with 10th-placed St Albans City visiting Colston Avenue. The Robins currently sit in the bottom four and need a positive result – along with favourable outcomes elsewhere – to ensure they are outside the relegation places by 5pm on Saturday.
St Albans City
St Albans City was founded in 1908 following the collapse of an earlier club in 1904. Based in Hertfordshire and playing at Clarence Park, the team – nicknamed “The Saints” – quickly established itself in regional leagues before joining the Athenian League in 1920. The 1920s marked a golden era, with multiple league titles and strong cup performances.
The club spent much of the 20th century in the Isthmian League, experiencing both success and relegation. Notable achievements include winning the London Senior Cup in 1971, alongside several near-misses in national amateur competitions.
In the 21st century, St Albans faced financial difficulties but recovered, earning promotion to higher non-league divisions and enjoying a brief spell in the Conference Premier (now the National League).
After 11 consecutive seasons in the National League South, the Saints suffered a shock relegation in 2024/25, finishing on 45 points – just one point from safety – and returning to the Isthmian Premier League.
This season, St Albans impressed in the FA Cup, progressing through four qualifying rounds by defeating Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, Hitchin Town, Woodford Town, and Banbury United to reach the First Round Proper. They were drawn away to Burton Albion and lost 6–0, but exited the competition with credit after an excellent run.
In the league, St Albans have had a mixed campaign but have consolidated their position in the Isthmian Premier Division following relegation. They currently sit 10th with a record of 16 wins, 8 draws, and 17 defeats, and are set for another season at this level. A win at Colston Avenue would secure a top-10 finish.
Head to Head
Prior to this season, it had been some time since the two sides last met. Their previous encounters came during the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons in the Conference South. St Albans won all four fixtures – both matches in 2004/05 ended 3–1, while in 2005/06 they recorded a 2–0 win at Colston Avenue and a 3–0 victory at Clarence Park.
The sides met earlier this season at Clarence Park. After an even first half, Carshalton took the lead through Bryan Ifeanyi in the 66th minute. It appeared the Robins would hold on, but late goals from Harrison Smith (89’) and Michael Bostwick (92’) turned the game around, leaving Carshalton empty-handed.

There was a debut at Aveley for winger Kavalli Heywood, who came on for the closing minutes, while defender Moussa Diarra made his second appearance. Both played a part in securing a point against one of the league’s top sides and will hope to be involved again this weekend.
Pre-Match Analysis
Saturday’s match is crucial for Carshalton, with their Step 3 status on the line. The Robins sit in the relegation zone, one point behind Hashtag United and two points ahead of Cray Valley PM.
A win for Carshalton, combined with a Hashtag United draw or defeat against Dulwich Hamlet, would lift the Robins out of the bottom four. A draw could also be enough for 18th place if Hashtag lose, as they have an inferior goal difference.
There is further complexity, as Hashtag United have applied for voluntary relegation. If accepted, and they are placed at the bottom of the table, Carshalton could survive by finishing fourth from bottom. A point for the Robins would ensure they finish above Cray Valley PM due to a superior goal difference, although this would also be the case if the Millers fail to beat Dartford.
Manager Steven Bates will not rely on permutations and will instead focus on securing three points, which he hopes will be enough to preserve Step 3 status.
Saturday is also “Club Day,” with an awards presentation in the clubhouse at 5:30pm for staff, players, fans, and volunteers from both the men’s and women’s teams. This will be followed by a staff vs coaches match at 6:30pm on the pitch.
Key Player
Striker Leo Sery joined St Albans City ahead of the 2025–26 season from Hendon, as part of efforts to strengthen the club’s attacking options. He has since developed into one of the team’s most important players, known for his goal-scoring instincts and ability to lead the line.
Sery began his career with Brentford U18s, finishing the 2022/23 season as the academy’s top scorer. He then moved into non-league football with Hanwell Town before gaining valuable experience on loan at Harefield United.
After impressing there, he joined Harrow Borough, where he made an immediate impact and finished as the club’s top scorer. His form earned him a move to Hendon, before eventually signing for St Albans.
He has been in excellent form this season, scoring 17 league goals – placing him fourth in the golden boot race behind Jake Hutchinson (21), Alex Hernandez (20), and Daniel Ogunleye (20).
At 22, Sery brings energy, pace, and significant potential, with performances that suggest he could progress further in the non-league pyramid or attract interest from higher-level clubs.
The Gaffer
Following relegation from the National League South, Ian Culverhouse remained in charge and guided the Saints to the First Round Proper of the FA Cup. However, in the week leading up to the tie against Burton Albion, both Culverhouse and assistant Paul Bastock were approached by King’s Lynn Town, a club Culverhouse had previously managed.
Despite St Albans requesting that any approach be delayed until after the cup tie, both Culverhouse and Bastock accepted the move. This left Michael Bostwick as player-interim manager for the Burton match, which ended in a 6–0 defeat.
The search for a permanent manager concluded with the appointment of former Billericay boss Gary McCann. His arrival marked a new chapter for the club, bringing a reputation for stability, tactical awareness, and long-term squad development.
McCann previously spent over a decade at Hendon, providing consistency and leadership across 13 years. He later managed Hampton & Richmond Borough, guiding them to multiple FA Cup first-round appearances.
He also had a spell at Billericay Town, where he narrowly missed out on the Isthmian Premier Division title by a single goal, before departing early the following season.
At St Albans, McCann has arrived with an established coaching team and a clear vision, expressing confidence in the club’s structure and long-term direction.
