CAFC vs Canvey Island – Preview
Following Saturday’s 2–1 defeat at Potters Bar Town, the Robins return to Colston Avenue this weekend to take on Canvey Island.

It has been a difficult spell for the Robins, who are now without a win in 16 matches – a run stretching back to 11th November, when they secured a 3–2 victory at The Dripping Pan against Lewes. Of those 16 games, seven have ended in draws and nine in defeat. Remarkably, Carshalton have taken the lead in 10 of those matches but have been unable to hold on and convert those advantages into victories.
Following the defeat to Potters Bar, the Robins dropped into the relegation zone for the first time this season. They now sit 19th in the table, two points from safety. With several sides around them holding games in hand, turning draws into wins is essential if they are to climb the table.
The next three fixtures could prove decisive. The Robins host bottom side Canvey Island on Saturday, before travelling to 14th-placed Cheshunt. The sequence concludes with a home game against 16th-placed Wingate & Finchley the following Saturday. These encounters against teams in and around the relegation zone will be crucial to Carshalton’s survival hopes, particularly with several challenging fixtures still to come later in the campaign.
Last time out, the Robins made the trip to Hertfordshire to face Potters Bar Town. The hosts made a fast start, opening the scoring after three minutes through Damaray Anyadike, before Brandon Adams doubled the lead on 19 minutes. Carshalton fought back and halved the deficit before half-time through a strike from outside the box by Fabio Saraiva, but they were unable to find an equaliser in the second half, as the game ended 2–1 to Potters Bar Town.
Canvey Island FC
Founded in 1926 and based in Essex, Canvey Island have been a staple of English non-league football for a century. In their early decades, the club competed in local leagues such as the Southend & District and Thurrock Combination, gradually building success before progressing through the Parthenon, London and Greater London leagues in the mid-20th century. By the 1970s and 80s, they were established in the Essex Senior League, winning the title in 1986–87 and again in 1992–93 under manager Jeff King. Early records were largely lost in the 1953 East Coast floods, but from the early 1990s the club entered a period of remarkable progress.
After promotion from the Essex Senior League in 1994, Canvey climbed rapidly through the Isthmian League, reaching the Premier Division by 1999. The 2000–01 season remains the most memorable in their history: they won the FA Trophy at Villa Park and enjoyed a famous FA Cup run, beating Football League sides such as Port Vale before eventually losing to Burnley in the third round.
In subsequent years, the club reached the Conference National (now National League) but later voluntarily stepped down due to financial constraints, returning to the Isthmian League. The 2010s and early 2020s brought consolidation in the Isthmian League North Division (Step 4). In 2020–21, Canvey reached the FA Cup first round again, beating Banbury United before bowing out to Boreham Wood. They then finished as North Division runners-up in 2021–22 and secured promotion to the Isthmian Premier Division via the play-offs. In their first season back, they finished third, narrowly losing to Aveley in the play-off semi-final.
Last season, Canvey narrowly avoided relegation, finishing on 44 points – five clear of Hendon – to secure another year in the Isthmian Premier Division. However, this campaign has not been plain sailing. The Gulls currently sit bottom of the table on 22 points, nine from safety with 11 games remaining.
Head to Head
Last season, the Robins travelled to face the Gulls in October. On a cold Tuesday night, the hosts took the lead in the second half through Jamie Salmon and held on to claim all three points.
Carshalton gained their revenge in the return fixture at Colston Avenue in February. After Darren Foxley put Canvey ahead in the fifth minute, the visitors were reduced to ten men just before half-time when Jamie Salmon received a second yellow card. The Robins took full advantage after the break – Nabeel Ghannam equalised just a minute into the second half, and David Smith put them in front on 67 minutes. Despite a few nervy moments, Carshalton held on for the win.
This season, the sides met at Park Lane in November. The hosts made the perfect start, opening the scoring after three minutes through Max Fiddes. However, Carshalton responded well, with Kola Salami racing through to equalise on 24 minutes. Fiddes restored his side’s lead on 67 minutes, but the Robins fought back once again, levelling late on through an own goal following pressure from Nzuzi, as the sides ultimately settled for a 2–2 draw.

New manager Steven Bates has had a busy few days, overseeing four departures and five arrivals. Sanchez Ming, Eddie Oppong, Chris Dickson and Nikolai Krokhin all left following the defeat against Welling United on Tuesday.
Carshalton then announced four new signings on Friday. Defender Leo Young joined on loan from AFC Wimbledon for the remainder of the season, alongside defender Denzel Akyeampong, most recently with Torquay United; defender Hamilton Bunga, who previously featured for Gosport Borough; and goalkeeper Hubert Graczyk, who was at Steven Bates’ former club Wealdstone earlier this season. All four started at Potters Bar Town on Saturday and, despite the defeat, looked like valuable additions to the squad with nine crucial games remaining.
The fifth signing was Charlie George, formerly of Hampton & Richmond. George began Saturday’s game on the bench but looked lively when introduced and came close to a late equaliser, dragging his shot just wide of the post. After impressing in his first appearance, he will likely be pushing for a place in the starting line-up for the crucial clash with Canvey Island.
Pre-Match Analysis
With Carshalton dropping into the relegation zone for the first time this season following the defeat to Potters Bar Town, and Canvey Island sitting bottom of the league and nine points from safety, this is a massive game for both sides. With Carshalton having nine matches left and Canvey 11, opportunities to pick up points are running out – especially with tougher fixtures still to come on paper.
Canvey have struggled on the road this season, recording just one win and three draws away from home, compared to four wins and four draws on their own ground. Carshalton will hope to capitalise on that record as they search for their first victory since 11th November.
Key Player
Despite Canvey’s struggles this season, Kwabena Yeboah has featured in all but one of the Gulls’ league matches. Named Canvey Island’s Supporters’ Player of the Month for January, Yeboah is clearly a fan favourite and scored the opener in their 3–2 win over fellow Essex side Brentwood Town in October. Manager Garry Kimble will look to him as one of his key men in their fight for survival.
The Gaffer
Canvey Island began the season under former England manager Peter Taylor. However, following their Essex Cup exit on penalties to Step 5 side Benfleet and a poor run of league form that left them bottom of the table, Taylor stepped down. Player-coach Michael Finneran briefly took charge on an interim basis before the club appointed Garry Kimble as first-team manager at the end of October.
A former Canvey Island player, Kimble enjoyed a professional career with clubs including Charlton, Fulham, Doncaster and Gillingham. As a manager, he has extensive experience across Essex, having led Tilbury, Burnham Ramblers, Great Wakering Rovers and two spells with Witham Town, from whom he joined the Gulls.
One of his first matches in charge was the home fixture against the Robins in early November. His side produced a strong performance in a 2–2 draw, and Kimble will be hoping for a similar display on Saturday as he looks to guide his team out of the relegation zone.
